Can a voom receiver that has never been activated be activated by installing a active card and a 8vsb module? I see new units on Ebay but the sellers act totally dumb. I am a new member and hope I am in the right place to ask question.

I am having a problem with my voom. It scans local channels they come in for
a minute then says not authorized. Any ideas. The units were activated.

Sounds like your unit is defective. I don't think it's the smart card
since you can still scan local channel with a deactivated one. On a
normal working receiver you would see a progress bar under option 4.

Hi. I am new to Voom, and was looking for a little info on the issue
that I am having. I bought a Voom receiver hoping I can use it for OTA
use. After hooking up the box I gained access to the "Install Wizard"
and tried to scan for locals, but instead of the scanning the whole
screen just blinks. This will keep on happening until I press back. I
also tried to "Aim Antenna", but that doesn't do anything either.

Current Software 02.4C
HAL Version: 00.07.37

my local station made some maintenance changes to their PSIP equipment which
caused me to lose that channel on my voom box. They said to have the STB
relearn the local channels. I did a rescan but did not fix the problem. Have
any ideas? thanks.

thanks for the response guys. however i got lucky I recieved my
reciever and it had the access card installed and it works great !
I had no trouble at all setting it up. The only problem I'm having
with my ota is the same one I've been having for a while now.
sometimes the locals come in great (signal 96-100) then fade to
almost nothing for no reason. opnce I get that solved I'll be doing
great. any ideas?

You are right, no hit for deactivation was sent. This site explains
what type of receivers can be used.

As Thomas says you must have a card and it must have been activated.
No "kill hit" signal was sent to receivers plugged in and active--in
other words the receiver had to be legit and service paid up. Ours
still works just fine. There were a bunch of receivers stolen at one
point and have been selling on ebay to unwary purchasers.

Yes, and the card must be active. The first voom receiver I bought on ebay had a card but it had been deactivated when voom went out of business. When they sent the "kill hit" the satellite feed or the receiver had to be unplugged for it to work. The good news is that there are a lot of active receivers for sale on ebay. They usually sell for around $60.00.

I purchased a reciever for ota but it doesn't have a access card, will
the recievers work for ota without their cards? For $20 i'm really
not worried either way. I didn't get it yet and was just curious.

As you found out. From my experience with the Voom box, it is just a waste of time and good money. Well, money at least. All Voom boxes are area specific. Programmed by the satellite provider for local channels in a specific geographical area. Once moved to another area it must be reprogrammed to that area. And sines the provider is non existent, thus no new programming. Wallah ! = "Boat Anchor" I want to mention that I have a HDTV station ten miles from me with good signal...

my ebay voom box reads good signal strength but will not lock in any
of the stations. my local tv guy just thinks it is a bad voom box.
do you think the local ota's got programmed in by the voom satellite.
if that was the case why do they have the scan feature.---
