Will receiver from eBay work on my system?

Hi: I subscribe to DISH Network via my cable company. They require I rent a DISH Network 351 receiver from them. Will a 311 model from eBay work? Hotwired (cable company) says it is their policy to only rent to subscribers. Glenn
