I live in the Atlanta area, and I'm considering the upgrade to the new dish. I know that I would get the local HD channels and the mpeg 4 upgrade, but is there anything else? Does the mpeg 4 help the SD programming at all? It might just be me, but the SD looks pretty bad on a 42" plasma as compared to the 32" SD in the bedroom. If I do the upgrade, will I get to keep my old HD box also (and will it even work with the new dish?) I'm just wondering if it is worth the $$ and, more importantly, the 2 year contract. I'd really like to hold out for an HD DVR, but will upgrading now make me pay more when the new HD DVR does come out?

Thanks,
Eli

Eli,

I am in the Atlanta area as well, and I got the upgrade in December because I have issues with OTA reception when its windy. If you have solid OTA reception, then you will gain little if you upgrade now. The upgrade will do nothing to help the SD picture quality on your plasma. SD material will almost always look better on an SD set than on an HD set.

If you are getting it for free, yes it would be worth it. D* is transitioning all HD subs eventually to MPEG4 anyway. If you live in LA, you will still need MPEG4 for locals - probably before this year is out.

Dispite what people are saying, you "NEED" to upgrade your HD receiver and dish "NOW" while D* is providing a swap! If you want to be able to see new National HD channels when they become available you will need the new AT9 dish and H20 receiver. Plus, the H20 receiver "WILL" boost your OTA signal and will allow you to get those hard to receive Local HD channels! Why wait!? Get it over with and it will be less worry later!

Anyone know if the 5 LNB setup will be worthwhile for those
of us in the Los Angeles market?

I recently upgraded to the H20 and I live in West Hills and Ventura County. Plus with the $200.00 rebate for the H20 makes it free. Bought mine at Costco for less then 200 bones. All I need now is the AT9 5-LNB dish.

Im very happy with the H20 so far despite some complaints I've read here with some users.

new receivers are great as long as you only care about nbc/abc/cbs/fox

Just making sure everyone knows that :) I only found out a few months ago and feel this is a dirty little 'secret' that the people that aren't full informed may not realize until the free dish etc is up and they go to watch pbs/upn/wb in HD.
