I remember Iceberg said that the HOA that hebelongs to do not allow a dish to be planted into the ground, he has a 6ft dish on his balcony, but Iceberg is a member of the HOA so I am sure they could make an exception.

OTARD (the FCC document) only protects dishes up to 1 meter. This allows you to put as many dishes as you want up as long as they are under 1 meter or on your own property. (thats why at one point I had seven of them)

Anything above you really don't have OTARD to protect you so technically if they (HOA) say take it down you have to.

qwert is correct. I have a 6 foot dish on my deck. The HOA (of which I am the VP) wil not allow me to plant it in the ground. So I have one on the deck and one that I wheel out of the garage if I have to get those satellites with LOS issues.

I guess the question is for the OP...what type of HOA are we talking about? Do you live in a house and have your own back yard or is it a town house area? If you have your own back yard that is EXCLUSIVELLY yours then you should be able to. I live in a townhouse so I do not have exclusive area to the yard.

When I bought my house, the lawyer said that there were rules against antennas and clothes lines. Some people find them unsightly I guess. Just this morning I counted houses and those with the pizza dishes. Out of 12 houses, 9 had pizza size dishes. Some of those dishes are mounted up a lot higher than my BUD is. I completely ignored the "No Antenna" rules and planted the dish in the ground. No complaints at all. My neighbor has 4 pizza dishes on his back shed, and another neighbor installs Starchoice and 2-way internet dishes for a living. He has a 2-way internet dish on his front step. I don't think I'll get any complaints.

I've gone conservative with a 7.5 ft dish.

you can but the only issue is its the same satellite unless there are multiple dishes.

I have 4 boxes running off my C-Band setup. 3 digital and one analog.

Also, if you're talking about subbing 4dtv rather than FTA, you'll have to pay the full price to sub a second receiver.

That's a difficult question to answer since we really don't know what you're looking for with that question.

Let me attempt to explain though - the dish is mounted on a pole (connected at the center of the dish), and will either be moved by an actuator or an H-to-H mount. About the best movement you'll get will be 180 degrees (or half way around the pole). So from the center point (when the dish is pointed due south from your location), you have approx 1/4 of a circular turn in each direction.

As the dish turns, it will become lower towards the sides, and highest on when pointed due south. If your dish were to turn a full 180 degrees, it would actually take almost the whole 360 circle around the pole since the sides would sweep the remaining area. It will not actually take up all of the area because of the way the dish tilts, but you can figure it will take at least a cubical area 10x10x10 centered around the mounting point on the dish.

no you don't. If you own the backyard (if you cut the grass in YOUR back yard) you can go up to 39.66667 inches of a dish and be protected under OTARD

I own my backyard but dont cut my grass .. I pay the HOA for that so we all get a better deal and don't have to worry about people not maintaining their lawns..

I doubt my HOA would pester me much if I would asked them if they wanted 1 big dish or a rediculous number of smaller dishes...

The HOA's permission is implicit in that they MUST allow any number of dishes up to 39". To consider asking the HOA for permission for this is like asking them for permission to breath in your home.

Probably better to approach the HOA and try to find some way to make it happen. It would be good to find out if anybody in the HOA is tech-savvy and try to deal with them as much as possible. The easiest path to approval is likely to be through those who can actually understand what you're up to. The ignorant are more likely to dismiss things without giving them a chance.

Just look at the trouble people have getting their wives onboard and I am sure they've heard way more about it than the average HOA person has. Approach the wrong people and you may not get a second chance. (Just based on my experience with HOAs).
