Charter Launches Spectrum TV App on Roku

"Charter's OTT-friendliness, which has been one of its major selling points in Washington for a proposed Time Warner Cable merger, just got friendlier.

Charter President Tom Rutledge said Monday (Oct. 12) that its customers would be able to use Roku devices to access TV content on any Roku-connected screen in the house using the Spectrum TV app, which means the device will offer cable channels alongside streamed over-the-top (OTT) content on those sets. I just added the app to my Roku and it looked like if I had Charter TV (I don't) it would be good to go. ??? This certainly makes switching from Dish a stronger possibility.

I have it, but to be honest I cannot understand the purpose, unless you want to stream cable content live to a tv that you do not have a cable box for.

An article I read last week suggested that this might come to TiVo at some point. If that's true it could finally take away the one disadvantage to using your own TiVo on Charter, access to the on demand library.

It doesn't come up often but it would be nice to be able to grab an episode or two on demand if I didn't have a season pass setup from the start. It's better than waiting a year for it to come to Netflix.

It looks like this also works on a computer from Charter.net. Again it only seems to work from the cable modem tied to your Charter account. I just tried to watch from my office that also has Charter internet and all the watch live buttons were greyed out.

I just found out this was available on iOS as well. I can see myself throwing a live sporting event on my iPad while I'm playing a video game on the TV. I already do this pretty often with MLB.tv and WatchESPN.

The price is $12.99 for HBO + the local broadcast fee for your locals(assuming your locals are available through this) + taxes. There is also a $5 add on that gives you a bunch of extra channels.

I stated the cost this way because this is exactly the way it is. They are deceivingly advertising this as $12.99 for your locals + HBO but it's not, because of the extra local broadcast fee.

This competes with Sling TV.

That is the best reason, get the cable channels you pay for without a box fee.

For $20 I get all the network channels (CBS, NBC, ABC..) and HBO or Showtime and most of the more popular cable networks like HGTV, Food, AMC, etc.... I think it is a pretty good deal. Oh they give you free Roku 3. The $20 is not just first year... that's the fixed price.

Before this I kept getting the $99 for all TV/Internet/Phone... and only for 1 year.. and you have to pay for the box.

That's not a bad deal at all. I would rather have a Xbox One, PS4, or Tivo app so I don't have to put yet another box under my TV but I would definitely get this when my double play promos run out and I cut the cord again. I can get all my locals OTA but it would be worth it for HBO and AMC alone to me.

I actually only want the local channels because I am out of antenna range. I read that they actually offers only local + HBO for $12.99 per month with the free Roku 3. Maybe I will try to ask for that instead. They provided an URL to sign up but when I logged in, I don't get any option to sign up for the stream plus package. I guess I will have to call.

Signed up! The guy tried to sell me the Triple Play Gold for $139 a month for the first year. Then finally signed me up for the stream plus. Just HBO alone is normally $15 a month. So extra $5 gets me all locals and most of the most watched cable channels. This is probably the best cord cutter package in the US.

The sales guy said the app just came out on Xbox 360 and should be out in the future for Xbox One. I have a TV upstairs hooked up with the old Xbox 360 for the kid... and now he could also watch TV on it.

My double play promos just ran out. I thought I still had some time left but I got a letter saying they were going to extend a partial discount for me for another year. This letter still showed my bill increasing by $40 per month which I am not willing to pay. I don't watch enough TV to justify this cost and I was a happy being a cord cutter before this offer.

Now I just need to decide between this and Sling TV. Charter's option seems to be the better choice for me since it includes both of my most watched cable channels, HBO and AMC. The only other cable channels I would miss are BBC America and FX but I don't watch either often enough for it to be a big deal.

Edit: I didn't actually go through with my cancellation. When I called to cancel they bumped me to the loyalty department and they offered me the same double play rate I had before. This is Spectrum Silver for $101.95 including taxes and CableCard fee.

At that price I will keep it since it's only $20 more than internet only plus Spectrum Stream or Sling TV would cost me. Spectrum Silver includes HBO, Showtime, Cinemax and most of the same channels available in AT 250 on Dish so it's worth the extra $20 to me.

Earlier today I had received a letter informing me that my new rate would go up to $140 plus taxes and fees so this is much better.

Got my free Roku 3 yesterday. Unlike on the Android app, the Spectrum TV app on the Roku does allow me to watch all the locals. The HBO live channels are not in HD though. I switch between watching the same movie on HBO Go (on Roku) and Spectrum TV HBO (on Roku) and the Spectrum one is like 480p or maybe worst. The ones on HBO Go are in HD.

The other thing is that I found out History channel app does not support Charter Spectrum TV. It listed like 50 providers but Charter is not among them.

History is part of A&E and none of the works with Charter. I HATE when I see that commercial from A&E telling people they can watch every episode, just use the app. Well then, quit screwing around and get EVERYONE onboard, not just "select" TV companies.
