Hello All!
I consider myself pretty tech-savvy but getting into this satellite setup stuff (with all the SWM's and LNB's and KaKu's) is driving me nuts.

I'll try to be as concise and clear as possible:

I manage an apartment building that's covered by DirectTV. I wanted to have DirectTV in vacant apartments that I am showing to potential renters so they sent me one free "demo box" that is supposed to be unlocked to work with any satellite. The apartment I'm showing off this week has an unused satellite right outside the living room and I'm trying to figure out how to get my "demo box" set up with this satellite.

Anyway, the satellite is a "Model AT9 Five LNB Ka/Ku Dish". It has the 110/119 LNBs (FW2) and the Integrated Ka/Ku LNBs (FW9).
It has two wires coming off of it that are connected to ground (see picture): 20120530_175201.jpg
The receiver is an HR24-500.

Basically, I'd like to know what hardware I need to purchase to get this set-up. Some online research tells me I need a SWM Power Passing Splitter and a SWM Power Inserter (
PI21R1-03?), but I'm not even sure if this satellite setup is "SWM compatible".

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You can run 2 lines from the ground block straight to the receiver. All you'll need is 2 BBC's or you can swap the LNB for a SWM3 or 5 (depending on location) add a power inserter and you're good! You won't need a splitter for just 1 receiver

:welcome to Satelliteguys GabeA23!

If there are two lines coming from the dish, then it's not a swm type. If you are using a receiver, then connect one line to the back using a bbc inline, IF it's not an H23. If it is, you don't need the bbc. If you are connecting a dvr, then use both lines and bbcs on both of them like Hutch mentioned, unless it's an HR23 model. Then you don't need them. Good luck and come back and ask more questions if you need to! BTW, no power inserter is needed.

It's an HR24

Whoah! You guys are awesome. !
I'd rather not run 2 cables to my receiver so I'm gonna either buy a brand new dish-setup that's SWM compatible or just swap my LNB for a SWM3 or a SWM5 (like Hutch1814 suggested).

The LNB's for sale on line say "for Slimline dish" in the title. Does this mean it will not be compatible with my AT9 dish? Which LNBs are compatible with my dish?

I'm not quite sure how to thank you guys so I guess I'll just have to link you to this awesome cat GIF:

There isn't a swm lnb that is designed for the AT9. You would have to get a Slimline for that. If you are only going to use the dvr as a demo, you can connect both lines with bbcs and you are good to go. If you want to use just one line, you will have to go into the menu and change one of the settings to allow it to work with only one tuner. It will still work as a dvr, but you can't record on one channel and watch another like you normally can with a dvr.

BTW, the attachment didn't work. I think you need 5 posts before you can post an attachment.

Woooo! Got it setup and it works beautifully. I'm not getting a fair number of channels that I think I should be getting. Could this be due to the fact that I inputted my dish as a "Slimline 5" during the dish setup, since there's no option for an AT9? I've included two pictures of what my configuration settings look like.
Thanks again!

You're missing all kinds of channels I bet! Your dish is either way out of wack, your LNB is bad, or you failed to put on BBC's

I'm guessing your alignment is off. Can you post your signal strengths for all of the satellites?

So, I'm trying to find a loophole...
