According to the press conference yesterday, E* will be giving the 622s for free. Does anyone know if this will be available to current customers or just new customers? I'm already set up for a dual tuner receiver. I have a line running from living room to bedroom, so I could get rid of my 211 and 311 and get just a 622. That would get rid of the extra receiver fee but would add a DVR fee, right? Would I still come out even on this, or do they charge the DVR fee plus $5.00 for the second tuner?

Like DISH usually does things, this offer as of right now is only for new subscribers. Screw us existing subs. :D

The slide at the ces presentation did say "No upgrade fees" so maybe this is a good sign for current subs.

Not that CSRs are necessarily the final word but I spoke to one who claimed to have info on the offere. She said it si for new customers only.

I sent one to them this morning as well.

I replied back that not extending this to current subs is a blow to their current subscriber base. I compared this to the cable companies not charging an upfront fee for their HD-DVR.

Is the Dish 622 a HD-DVR? If so, maybe I should call. I got an install later this week with Dish. I went for the 2 HD boxes for my living room, and bed room. Id like to have a HD-DVR in the living room.

This was their reply to my reply about existing customers getting the shaft:

"There may be offers in the future, but at this time nothing has been released. I would wait to see what happens over the next week or two. If there is a new offer for new customers, there will lots of times also be one for existing customers. We have no way to tell for sure at this point."

Well I think it's safe to say, there is NO WAY they are going to offer the free 622 to current subs. From my past experiences when I first got the webtv dish, to the 501, to my now 622, they just don't do business like that.

But I would surely spend the $199 for an additional 622 for my bedroom if that is the offer they end up doing, if not cheaper. Let's keep hoping..

I wouldn't mind paying the $199 up front. I wouldn't mind the 18-month committment. What I do mind is after all of that money, it's still a lease.

It would be totally different if it was you own it after the 18 months.

I will start laughing with Dish Network starts losing subscribers in droves to Directv because of not giving their existing subscribers the free 622 deal because Directv will probably match it with a free HD DVR for new subscribers and have LOTS LOTS more HD content. Dish in return will have to do more than just give a free HD DVR to their subscribers to keep them. They would probably have to have the HD programming for little or nothing just to keep those subscribers at that point.

Unfortunately, I agree. If DISH were to extend this to existing subscribers, that would immediately generate an even bigger firestorm from all the customers that have already popped for the $199 (or more) to get the 622.

If D* does come out with a free HD receiver, comparable selections and rates for new subs (or E* subs that are willing to switch), I suspect E* will be in a world of hurt.

Let the games begin!
