High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology — which effectively expands the range between the darkest and brightest images a TV or other display can produce — is generating growing attention in Hollywood's production community, and it "may well be an important feature of Ultra HDTV in future years, though the jury is still out, and will take some months to reach a verdict," according to David Wood, chairman of the International Telecommunication Union group responsible for a recommended global blueprint for Ultra HD.

If the broadcast cameras are updated they will be able to do to HDR. Right now cameras do 8 bit RGB because that is what the standard is. If the standard is updated, the cameras could be updated to cover the new range of colors and brightness.

People that have seen this in person swear this is the next big leap for HD and UHD alike.
I only wish I could get a peek at it!

I wonder if current content can get upconverted to HDR whether it be HD or SD content.

If it was shot on film it should be able to be converted.

Also digital cameras like the red series shoot in 12 or 16 bits per color, so that content could be converted.
