IR Commands Between Hopper and Joey...

Hello,

Does anyone know if the IR remote control commands are different for the Hopper vs. Joey? In other words, if both units were side-by-side, would the remote control of one device have any effect on the other?

I have the wiring infrastructure of one IR repeater system and two HDMI distribution units in my network closet. This was a design for DirectTV's Genie and Nomad, but I think that I will be going with Dish Network instead. My goal is to install one Hopper and one Joey in this central location, thereby providing access to both throughout the entire home. It would be a pain if I have to install an additional IR repeater system.

Hopper and Joey use paired RF remotes with up to 8 remotes per unit. IR control is optional with 15 different channels.

There are thousands of virtual RF channels, the Hopper pairs with the remote so no other RF remote will operate it unless it was also paired.

OK, sorry I meant to say that only some of the Dish IR remote controls will work with Hoppers / Joeys in channel one only. I have three 21.0 Dish remote controls in IR mode that I am using now for two Hoppers. One of them works a Hopper with Sling that has eight 40.0 remotes already paired to it. The IR remote has to be in channel one and in the Remote Manager menu (YELLOW - 6 - IR Tab) in the Universal Remote (IR) window that pops open Enable has to be selected and then Save.

To kind of summarize what's been said so far, the answer to the original question is no, the IR commands are not different. Any IR remote is going to affect both units if they are side-by-side. The assertion that there are 15 IR channels for Hopper/Joey is incorrect. Other Dish DVR's have up to 32 IR addresses, but Hopper/Joey only have one.

You will have to keep the two isolated. DirecTV would be easier to implement since it has 8 IR addresses. If you used older DVRs (not Hopper/Joey), you could use multiple IR addresses.

Why not consider using Dish RF remotes?

OK, thanks Zeigh. Good explanation.

Or just use a dual zone I/R block for your repeater system. I use one since I have 2 Onkyo receivers in my house that use the same Ir address. I use the Xantech ZC21 which feeds a 79000 for all the other components.

What should I do to get the $40 DVR enable?

2nd hopper installed
