Dish subscribers in NY or Philly with apple or kindle fire will be able to try ABC app for streaming starting tomorrow but
maybe ending June 30.

As always, competition spawns invention. Never would be on the table if not for the Hopper, Aereo, Slingbox, etc.. And further, this would be something they could charge something for that people probably would pay if reasonable. Now if they REALLY wanted to step up, they would have a premium plan that allowed getting a channel or channels from another market......

This is basically the HBO business plan, you must subscribe to the carrier to use the APP.

I wonder who will be the first content provider to cut out the cable/sat subscription requirement? They're available OTA for free, anyway.

OTOH, most nets are already available without cable/sat subscription via Hulu/Hulu Plus.

Yeah, but..... the OTA is free but you have to know that if there is money to be made!!!!

I say that because any hope of getting money from the providers ends if they give it away free. And really, a small percentage will watch long or often on the app.

A good ota dvr plus Netflix makes Hulu Plus rather redundant though, since the cable networks don't have much content on it. And not a lot of content on Hulu Plus isn't available from a Netflix and free Hulu combo.

IF the viewer has adequate OTA reception, yes.

It would be good to have ABC streaming if you have a poor upload connection/having internet issues, your signal goes out but you still have internet access, etc.

Also...ABC could advertise to you, as well as not use a tuner to sling the content.
