Which channel were you watching, 159 or 402? 402 is NBC's Universal Sports and is in hd aspect but not full screen while NBC Sports on 159 is in full hd.

I was watching soccer on 159 but the pictures were definitely not hd.

HD channel does not automatically mean HD broadcast/content.

159 is in HD. 2 possibilities. The originating telecast was in SD only. Do you have Guide settings as HD only or HD and SD?.
