Hello

I am curious about something that the Sales guy told me about the 622 when I placed my order. He said that I can record 1 program and watch 1 each (on my HDTV in the living room and Stand. Def. TV in the bedroom) with the 622. He emphasised that I will not be able to record 2 programs at the same time like my DTV Tivo did. I most likely will not be installing/using an OTA.

With a setup like this will I or will I not be able to record 2 channels at once? Also, while recording 2 channels (if possible) how many would I be able to watch at the same time. I tried to research this online but could not find anything that answered my question. If I missed something, I apologize, and would appreciate if you guys were kind enough to point me to the same.

Thank you.

You can record from all 3 tuners simultaneously and watch 2 independent prerecorded shows on TV1 and TV2 at the same time. I've never done that, but it's possible per the design. If you don't have an OTA antenna, then it's just the 2 sat tuners.

So if I am using only 2 tuners (no OTA) then that would mean that I could record 2 shows and and watch 2 independant pre-recorded shows at the same time?

Also, would I be able to watch live TV if I am recording 2 shows? Again, all this is with no OTA.

Thank you again.

You can record from all 3 tuners simultaneously, and also be watching 2 independent prerecorded programs on TV1 and TV2 at the same time. I haven't done that myself, but many have and the unit is designed to do that. If you don't have an OTA antenna, then it's just the 2 sat. tuners. (Sorry for the repeat - thought I lost the first one.)

You can be watching the shows you're recording in real time, but there are some tricks for TV2 that I'm not an expert on. (You need to put it into a slight delay mode.) Do a search for more threads on this topic.

Here's a link to the 622's "User's Guide". You can wade around in there to get some answers to your questions...

Love your username, btw...!

It is quite a bit different from a stock DTV Tivo, and worlds away from a hacked DTV Tivo, but if you just want to tape and watch some shows it does pretty good. To help you in your research think of the following

SAT1 = TV1
SAT2 = TV2
OTA1 = TV3

DVR1 = TV1
DVR2 = TV2

Now, like they said above, you may record on the top 3 and watch the bottom two simultaneously. You can even record on TV1 & TV2 while watching TV3 live. There is plenty of "ui' work left to be done on this unit but it gets the job done and it does it reliably, which is more than I can say about the HR20-700 which is about the biggest boat anchor ever conceived.

Thanks. But if I understand this right, then if I record on the top 2 then I cannot watch live TV (since I dont have OTA). Correct?

Thanks Again.

Correct.

And to recap.

You have Inputs (3 Tuners), a Hard Disk Drive, and Outputs (TV1 and TV2).
The Outputs get their programming from either the Tuners or the Hard Disk Drive.

You have 3 tuners (2 sat's & 1 OTA); the tuners can each receive a different live program at the same time and record them to the Hard Disk Drive. This is regarless if TV1 Output or TV2 Output is on or off.

You have 2 outputs for your viewing enjoyment, TV1 Output (his/HD) and TV2 Output (her/SD).

TV1 Ouput can watch (live) what is coming in on Sat Tuner 1 with pause function; or
TV1 Output can watch (live) what is coming in on the OTA Tuner with pause function; or
TV1 Output can watch (recorded) a show from the hard disk, including a show currently being recorded from any tuner.
However, it can only do one of the above 3 at any given time.

TV2 Ouput can watch (live) what is coming in on Sat Tuner 2 with pause function; or
TV2 Output can watch (recorded) a show from the hard disk, including a show currently being recorded from any tuner.
However, it can only do one of the above 2 at any given time.

Although TV2 Output can not watch the OTA Tuner live and pause it, Remote 1 can set the OTA tuner to Record to the HDD, and then TV2 Output can watch the OTA recording with a few seconds delay. This can be done while TV1 Output is watching Sat Tuner 1 live.

And of course, neither TV1 or TV2 Outputs can skip forward pass the current point of live recording.

Thanks. I was afraid of that. I have ultra super-basic cable for local channels. This level includes the HD local channels + TNT HD and Discovery HD. But they are all QAM64. I guess I will need an antenna if and when I go with the 622. But Dish will not just send me a receiver. I do not want an installer! Have I mentioned that before? :D

See ya
Tony

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Dish 811 does QAM, no DVR though.

you might get one off eBay, but be sure to verify the S and R numbers with dish so you know there are no charges pending on the receiver.
