For lack of a better title, that's call I could think of.

I will admit this is partially my fault.

A couple of days ago, I purchased a Dish receiver to resell on eBay. I see a lot of used receivers on eBay, so I bought it for $30, it is worth around $100.

It was at a house sale auction. They sold the house, and then the personal property. The couple that owned it, the man passed away, and the wife was the last out of the family alive.

I figure since they moved out of the house, they would of cancelled the programming, since they had not live there for a couple years.

So I assumed (my fault), that it was clear to resell.

Today I call dish and give them the R00# and they said there is a $654 balance owed on it. (Dunno how on earth they could of racked up that much).

Dish wants the receiver back.

Now I can understand that dish did not want to credit me $30 for my loss, and that's OK with me. It's not dish's fault that I bought a "balance owed" receiver.

Get this, dish wants me to return the receiver to them. They said they would pay for return shipping, but I would (get this) have to buy a box, packing material, and tape, to box it up and send it to them.

So not only am I out $30, they wanted ME to buy a box, and packing material, and tape (about $5.) and send it back.

So I asked if maybe they would hook me up with HBO or Cinemax free for 3 months (about $12-$13).

I figure if I have to spend time and money boxing it up, they should at least compensate me somehow, right?

Nope, even after speaking to loyalty, they won't do anything for me.

So hence the title of this thread. Not only did I just loose 30 dollars, they wanted me to spend time and money shipping it back to them.

Well guess what? Unless dish offers me something (hell a $5 ala-carte channel would suffice), I'm going to keep the receiver in my closet.

I'd say "ok" then hang up and proceed to throw the receiver in the dumpster because you can never activate it unless you pay the balance

lets see....
porn
PPV movies
rasslin/ufc ppv's
then dont pay the bill for a couple months and get a $350 or more cancel fee

I wonder if you could sell the hard drive? It's a 250GB. IDE though. I know some DVR's have a hard drive that can't be used in a pc due to some kind of funky power setting.

WTF did you expect? I would ''guess'' that 90% plus of the receivers are leased, especially newer high end DVR's.

Sure there are plenty of owned legacy receivers out there, but nothing worth much.

If it is indeed a VIP DVR, sell the HDD to recoup you costs.

edit, your post beat me to the PUNCH.

Wait are we talking about coinmaster32,or thesprirtofcoinmaster32?:D

I gotta ask though..what model receiver is it?

That's why I asked.I was trying to figure out what model receiver came with a 250gb ide drive.Aren't the 722 hdds sata?

If the receiver were leased and not returned and no longer being rented, could it not be considered stolen property. If one is the knowing receiver (sorry for the pun) of stolen property, and does not return it to its rightful owner, doesn't that make one receiver of stolen property? Isn't destruction of stolen property also a crime. Just saying. You took a $30 gamble to make some money and instead you got a lesson in life. Sometimes doing the right thing is good for the soul and not the pocketbook. If doing the right thing were cheap, we'd all be doing it.
