Last Monday I activated my new BEV 3150 system and disconnected my 6 year old *C Navigo 421.I'm happy with the bell except for the simsubbing.I was talking about it with my cousin and he told he that it was techinically illegal because they don't have virtual channel maps and *C does.He said that the CRTC has been getting alot of complaints about it.What are everybody's thoughts about this?

TJ_77,

Bell ExpressVU, the craphole company that they are, are not in fact in violation of the CRTC.

Those simsubbing rules only apply to cable companies who broadcast at a regional level.

Satellite providers are a "national" broadcaster so those rules do not apply.

Kryspy

unfotunatelly, EVu & Sc have totally differetn simsubbing theories

SC does it at receiver level and does it correctly
EVu simsubs everyone with either Toronto or Vancouver

EVu also simsubs TSN (even though it isn't OTA)

I have written letters to the CRTC to complain about Bell's simsubbing; and how according to the CRTC rules it is illegal. The first letter brought a response from the CRTC giving Bell 3 weeks to correct the situation. When that didn't happen I responded back, and haven't heard anything else about it.

A few other people on a different board I visit did the same thing, and they received letters back saying that the CRTC was Ok with what Bell was doing.

My solution; as a Canadian I subscribe to Dish Network. It's an expensive way around it; and it isn't the only reason I got Dish.

Bell has a waiver due to technical limitations in doing targetted simsubs ala Star Choice.
As to why TSN rates a simsub, that's anyones guess.

hmmmm....lets see

Bell owns TSN
Bell can do whatever they want for simsubs
TSN loves showing the Canadian Tire ads all the time :)

I figured you knew the reasons :D

same reason why they simsub CH across the whole country, when only a few areas wouold qualify for a simsub

So if we conplain enough we it eventually go away or be done "properly"?
I was a SC customer until June 6 2005 and I recieved about 4 simsubs over the 6 years. When switching to Bell I completlely overlooked their horrible subbing method.Good thing I only signed a 1 year contract.

I don't know if it can be done properly on the expressvu boxes. I have a feeling its a Echostar software and hardware issue more then anything else.

I must admit I love the HD choices on ExpressVu and am considering getting a ExpressVu HD DVR when they come out. :)

It is done "properly" as per the agreement between Bell and the CAB (Canadian Association of Broadcasters of which Bell is the largest member). Anyone who selects Expressvu should be aware of this.

The agreement between SC and the CAB is different - essentially only in Grade B contour when the CAB member has notified SC in writing.

I went to Windsor, On the other day to view the DSR530 in action. In passing the dealer, who also sells Expressvu, mentioned that Bell is going to move to their version of HDLite (3 HD/transponder) ala DTV. There is already a difference in HD PQ SC vs Bell at 2/transponder.

He also mentioned that Echostar 5 will be moving to 129 to become Ciel 1 as soon as FCC approval for the move is approved. It is scheduled to be operational at the end of August. According to him this will open up at least 2 additional transponders on Anik F2 ku for SC at the end of September. 1 will be used to return the PPV service back up to May levels, and the other for CBC HD + 1 additional unnamed service - but we can surmise that it will not be a Bell or Global owned service.

What programming are you missing by their not doing the simsubs "properly"?
