Smart TV's

Are there any that don't get messed up with automatic updates? I have a Vizio that I now have to wait about 1 minute before can change channels or change input or, especially, adjust the volume. Actually, I hate these new TV's since you can't adjust the volume until after the TV is turned on.

Was your tv manufactured in the 1970's?.. mechanical sound adjustment has been gone quite awhile

Your answer is useless so why bother to post? I'm well aware of how TV's evolved. That said, it is something worth bringing back to TV's. When you have several family members setting the volume all over the place it could be a problem when you go to watch a program without disturbing someone that is sleeping. Besides, it's not the only problem that I'm complaining about. If I didn't have to wait so long to adjust whatever on the TV, I probably wouldn't say anything about the shortcomings. If the manufacturers can't do a better job on these upgrades then my next TV won't be a "smart" TV - I'll get an addon like a standalone Roku instead.

Some of the systems allow you to set the startup volume, instead of just starting at the last level.

I run mine thru an AVR with a manual volume knob. Convenient.

Many televisions built in the last decade have a "default volume" that limits the impact of the lack of discipline/consideration that you describe. My TV defaults to 12% of maximum. It could just as easily be set to 1% or even 0%. My AVR is configured similarly.

Some TVs have headphone jacks for those that don't want to disturb others. If this is a consideration, it should be part of the purchasing decision.

Your solution involves many pitfalls -- not the least of which is how do you know what the current volume setting is and where it is going as you adjust it. The more "aware" a device is when it is "sleeping", the more power it consumes and that's a bad thing.
