Have a single Hopper coming. I see that there are two USB ports on the rear. Can I connect both my EHD's and have them both powered up or is it still one at a time? Thanks

I have run 3 transfer streams at once using only 1 rear connector to an unpowered 4-way hub.
Unlike the 722, you can have more than 1 powered on the hub and it works and distinguishes them.
The transfers can go to any of 3. The viewing/deleting can only access the "first" 2.
Do not depend on the hub powering your drive--that asks too much. Unless it is powered.

KKlare I still don't know if I have an answer. I do NOT want to run a hub. I just want to plug my first EHD in the USB port. Then plug the second EHD in the other rear USB port. Power both of them on from their own ps. Will the Hopper see both?

Yes... but, if it is the first time you've used and EHD the receiver will need to format the drives. Plug one at a time in and let it format. Then you can use both drives.

Fred, how about waiting until you actually get your Hopper and play with it a while...you THEN might be able to answers these questions for yourself.

The HUB was to show that you do not need to use all 3 built-in ports. You can share any one (or more) of them externally.
I bring one of the rear ports up front via the hub to make for easy plugging to any one/two/three of 11 USB cables.
I generally use the front port for one-at-time loading and the hub for the often used drives.
Then I plug in the supplies needed. You cannot do this on the 722 series.

Ken, you seriously need to start speaking English.

On my ViP722s, which go away tomorrow, I have experimented with using powered and unpowered USB hubs with a single self powered EHD and the Dish Adapter plugged in. It's a case of "it usually works."

I have had two EHDs plugged in to an unpowered USB port, and just powered up a single one. This appears to work.

I have also had an EHD powered up and plugged in to the rear USB port, and then plugged in a switched off EHD in the front port. This does NOT work. I still get an error message "you have connected an unsupported USB device" or some such. But the transfer I had running on the powered up EHD continued uninterrupted.

Go figure.

Now, I'm off to learn all the wonderful quirks of the Hopper system!

:D All's well everyone. I probably just over think everything. I only have two drives. A 500gb and a 1000gb. Been using them since Dish made this option available in the summer of 2008. The 1000gb is three quarters empty. If I stepped on toes I apologize. Just excited about the new equipment coming!
