First post.
I had the install yesterday. So far so good. All systems are go, and I am looking forward to completing the learning curve so I can enjoy all the features in this receiver.
I noticed last night that the heat generated from this VIP722 is significant. This DVR receiver is in a rack, inside a cabinet along with all the other gear and I thought that I might need to consider a fan to move this heated air.
I was thinking about an Ebay item. They have these lap top cooling fan units that plug into a USB port. Will this work? Will it shut off when you shut down the receiver or just run all the time?
I have emailed the seller his answer might be slanted just abit so I thought I would ask the question.

Thanks

The receiver never really shuts off unless you unplug it, so it would be running all the time.

Definitely get an external fan for that cabinet. These DVRs simply get WAY too hot in enclosed cabinets without some form of forced air. I got a fan that looks like a large computer case fan but plugs into a standard 120v outlet. I think it was from CoolerMaster. I cut a like sized hole in the back of my cabinet and installed the fan over it. I then cut a second hole on the other side of the cabinet (in the space where the 622 sits) for exhaust air to exit. No problems at all since I did that. The 622 still runs warm, but no longer so hot that I worry about spontaneous combustion!

Not sure about pulling power from the ViP itself - may not work as well or at all.
