I'm going to be moving house and checked with Voom to see what the cost would be.
They have a $125.00 transfer fee, which is OK.

However, when I inquired about adding a second box I was told that would cost $499.00
or $9.50 rental PLUS $199.00 installation fee, but then was told as I purchased the original
I could not rent.

Therefore I would have to pay $499.00 for the box PLUS $199.00 installation fee PLUS
$125 transfer fee for my original box. This is totally outrageous!!!!

Something has got to be wrong here.

When I have more time I'll call back and speak to a supervisor and see if I can get the
$199.00 install for free.

If you read this Wilt what is your take on it? Thanks.

It seems it would be cheaper to start over and rent 2 boxes or just to give up on VOOM
and get a free setup with DTV or DISH. This I do not want to do but I'm not going to be
robbed.

u r too cheap, if u can't afford it, then don't get it. u can't get everything for free. price of $199 is very reasonable considering they would install dbs attenna and ota attena together. My local retailers here would charge $399 for same job.
u might have to wait couple years until price comes down. or u can try to install it yourself. or u can always go with ota tuner and get your local channels in HD. :D
 
Im usually the one who is agenst Free, Free, Free, but I do agree that the price they quoted is way too steep!

A reasonable price would be $99 for the receiver and $59 for the installation, and at the very high side of things $199.

Voom never collected your SSN when you signed up, your better off to cancel and sign up again as a new customer. For once I wouldn't blame you if you decided to go that route!

A transfer fee and an install fee????? Dumb way to grow subscribers.
I've spoken to VOOM too about some of their inflexible policies. They told me the same thing; you can't rent one unit and own the other because they are not able to set up your account that way. Either own both or rent both. And if you go and buy a second hand receiver they won't authorize it. Under no circumstances.
So if you bought one today at $499 and decide to switch providers tomorrow you would be out $499. Sure you could sell it on ebay but then the next fellow would be left holding a boat anchor. Where's the value in buying a VOOM receiver? What if the service ends?
If it wasn't for the overall appeal of the service with all the HD material and very good PQ, you'd probably throw up your hands and give up. I keep thinking ( and hoping ) they will come around. Why should they charge $200 for an installation when many of us can hook it up in about a minute and set up the OTA and the rest of the features pretty quickly. Just UPS us the unit with instructions and technical phone support. Frankly, my professional install was no where near as good as my later customization by playing with the menu choices and tweaking. And you aren't supposed to touch the unit at all. So they send out a service guy for how many dollars cost to them to do something they could tell you how to do on the phone for free. That will cause cash problems. If some one requests it fine but otherwise save the money. I guess I'm to used to the do it yourself mentality of the big dish.
Cable company mentality is a mistake when there are so many alternatives today.....
They have an opportunity to cater to the varied needs of the marketplace with a little more flexible attitude. I really would like them to differentiate themselves from Dishnet and DirecTV and stick around for a while as "the good guys". Maybe if Cablevision spins them off and they go public that would be a very good thing. We'll see.

my only complaint is the price to get additional boxes added to an existing account...when I became a charter member in Dec, I only had one hd-ready tv...I just recently bought a sony 46" for the bedroom...to get Voom on the new set, I would have to pay $199 for the installation and another $199 for the box...I don't have a problem paying for the additional box, but paying $199 to install it when all they have to do is run some coax about 50' and drill through a wall? $50 should be reasonable to do this (I guess self installs would be reasonable as well but doesn't look like that will be happening anytime soon...)...had to call back several times since the hold times over over 15 minutes when i called to get this info...

If you order the correct number of boxes up front, you won't have this issue...

apparently the price went up in August...

Just spoke with a CSR about another issue I am having with one of my locals and asked about this again while I was on the phone...There was no wait time at all now...the price I was quoted was $199 for the install and $299 for the box...

Grand total of $498. Will still keep a separate HD tuner for my bedroom tv for now I guess...

any chance these prices will be going down soon?

Why does it have to be so outrageous. That price is way too high. This is why people are forced away from VOOM at times. I wish they would get there act together on this...its been a problem from the get go. They must become competitive with cable and other providers. Lower the price NOW VOOM!!!!

I saw an ad for VOOM last night (I forget which channel) for $49
install with 1 yrs commitment. It's not free, but it sounds like a
pretty good deal. So all you lurkers out there trying to decide,
it's time to jump on the VOOM bandwagon. And don't worry about the
year's committment, they may not last that long anyway.

VOOMing since 4/04 and LOVING IT!!!

I wish people would stop saying that VOOM's days are numbered. The infrastructure is there and the subscriber base is growing, albeit slowly. Primestar was absorbed but the subscribers were taken care of to some degree. Since HD is the future and these DSR-550's work well, I would expect VOOM or VOOM's services to remain for a long time. There are numerous options for a company with a good idea when they run into a financial roadblock.
Just relax and enjoy and leave the doom and gloom for people with SD only.

Eh, if you've been an Apple fanatic you would get used to it. But,
their stock (when I bought it) was at $12 and let's say that based
upon time and products, it is sitting above $40. People will rattle
their opinions, it's the revenue that speaks louder.

But the whole thing makes no sense. It's a very minor investment if you rent the equipment. It's not like investing in stock. You get the service for X amount/month and it's either worth it to you or not. Someday, when DirecTV actually has more than HD vaporware maybe they will be a legitimate choice. The DirecTV HD launch announcement is somewhat of a ploy to keep new HD people fom switching from DirecTV to VOOM or cable.
Why should the consumer be so concerned with VOOM's future? Just get the programming and enjoy it and don't buy the equipment at this point.
I would like them to suceed because I think their vision is very timely and the big DirecTV launch wouldn't be promoted right now without VOOM.

I keep hearing the BUZZ about the D* birds being launched 500HD
channels etc. Don't people get the fact the 500 channels are all the
different area locals ? I'll enjoy my VOOM for as long as it's around.

The vast majority will be locals but they will also have the bandwidth to offer their product at a consistently strong bit rate(more then now!) and will be able to add any and all new channels as they switch to HD. V* has more content some very good, but many are fluff. plus i get my sports only on D* right now and V* has a snowballs chance in he)) until that changes.

Its too high....they should take care of their present customers as much as they could. Not a chance! How they're staying afloat today with < 40,000 subscribers
after 1 year is in-itself mind boggling.

I too love Voom and will be with them until the service is turned off. TWC
here in Houston is now promoting their DVR and HD-DVR. All the normal
stuff.. record 2pgms and watch a third, PIP, etc.

My boss goats me almost daily now about what I'm missing out on. I just tell
him that 11 HD channels does not come close to my 40+ and I would go into
withdrawl w/o Voom. My ratio of HD vs SD watching is about 70/30 now.

If TWC were to double their HD channels, I might be tempted to switch, but
that's about what it would take, if not more.

Here's to hoping Voom lives long and prosperous...

Honestly, if TWC had UPN in HD here in Houston I would switch in a
heartbeat. I'm not buying an OTA receiver just to watch Enterprise though.

My boss goats me almost daily now about what I'm missing out on. I just tell
him that 11 HD channels does not come close to my 40+ and I would go into
withdrawl w/o Voom. My ratio of HD vs SD watching is about 70/30 now.

If TWC were to double their HD channels, I might be tempted to switch, but
that's about what it would take, if not more.

Here's to hoping Voom lives long and prosperous...

If you are right in Houston and will get a strong non-multipath signal there are some less expesive, first generation OTA tuners that will work decently. If you have an HDTV then you should know that some of the best, least compressed signals are the OTA ones. Sports, PBS, and some Network events are better in HD. A tuner can be found for $100-$150 on ebay. a friend gave me his 3 year old toshiba DST3000 DirectV HD receiver and it has an adequate OTA tuner that does not require authorization as long as it's not plugged into DTV's Satellite feed.
