When a Tivo unit phones home who does it call, Tivo or Directv ? If it's downloading Tivo software does it not call Tivo then ...? If it does call Tivo do they share the info (area code called from etc.) with D*?

it actually places 2 calls.

1 to a UUNET Backbone which it connects to tivo server

1 to direct to report ppv.... this is only once a month if not every 2

So the initial set-up call goes to Tivo and from then on if not plugged into a phone line it will never call D*. If that initail call does go to Tivo only do they share the info collected from that unit with D*, does anyone know for sure?

Just to make this a little clearer.
TiVO calls in every couple of days to upload you viewing habbits and check for updates that it may have not recieved from the satalite. If you unplug the TiVo from the phone line you will start to get a nagging message says that the TiVo has not phone in in X many days. upi can clear the message but it will keep comming back until it calls. The call to D* is about once a month and that is for 2 reasons: 1. to upload an PPV movies that you may have ordered and 2, to make sure that all your recievers are calling from the same number/house (althought with the phone line unplugged it does not give you any messages)BUT. If you do order x many PPV the reciever will stop working until it calls in... As far as I haev read, YES TiVo and D* share info.
