The Manny Ramirez trade remains on hold, and there are growing indications that the three-team blockbuster may be in trouble.

The Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates have been talking seriously for the past 24 hours about a deal involving Ramirez.

The Marlins would trade outfielder Jeremy Hermida and a prospect for Ramirez, and the Red Sox then would flip Hermida and prospects to the Pirates for left fielder Jason Bay.

The Pirates' return for Bay, sources say, is the last holdup in the deal. The Pirates are seeking an "appropriate return for an All-Star caliber left fielder" — and one who is affordable at $5.75 million this season and $7.5 million in 2009.

To trade Bay, who turns 30 on Sept. 20, the Pirates presumably would need to exceed the offer they received from the Braves last week — Class AAA outfielder Brandon Jones, Class AAA shortstop Brent Lillibridge and two pitchers in the low minors.

Two prominent Marlins prospects who have been mentioned — Class AA right-hander Ryan Tucker and Class A outfielder Michael Stanton — will not be traded, multiple sources said.

ESPN's Jayson Stark said an official with one of the clubs said the three-team Red Sox-Marlins-Pirates deal is dead.
According to Stark's source: "The Pirates are blaming the Marlins. The Marlins are blaming the Pirates. And the Red Sox aren't too happy with either of them." We fully expect another update five minutes from now saying a deal is nearly done.

Pirates turn Bay focus elsewhere

The Pirates apparently have turned their attention away from the Boston-Florida scenario and are looking elsewhere for Jason Bay suitors. One, according to ESPN, is Toronto, though I have not confirmed that. The other is Tampa Bay, which remains in play.

With only two hours left to deadline, bear in mind that deals involving prospects almost have to happen with teams that have been studied intensely. Sure, there are books on everyone, but this is Bay, a prime piece, and they are not going to send him away based on anything other than first-hand observation of prospects coming back.

Offers continue to come for John Grabow, but other left-handed relievers appear to be ahead of him in line.

Still nothing at all on Jack Wilson.

From SI.com : Red Sox are now talking to the Dodgers about Ramirez, where he could be reunited with former teammates Derek Lowe and Nomar Garciaparra. The Red Sox like outfielder Matt Kemp but the Dodgers would prefer to deal Andre Ethier. Ramirez's 10-5 rights don't seem to be any kind of issue.

This after Heyman said last night that the Dodgers had made it clear they were willing to trade Kemp for Ramirez. The Red Sox would surely prefer the right-handed hitter and are likely to hold out for him.

Manny to the Dodgers deal would make real sense for the Dodgers if they take it the way the Red Sox proposed it to the Marlins.
