Anybody that thinks $500 or $1000 / month is going to keep the crooked programs from paying far more to get top players is naive. Outlaw State will still be Outlaw State, it will just, the next time its caught cheating, say "well $12K/year is 'slave wages' " as their justification for not living within the rules.
Fact is, if you do the math, you are talking a "payroll" of $4M, since every athlete in every sport must be paid. Overall, college athletics do not make that much money. Lots of it is accounting tricks, charging off the infastructure to the general state budget.
When did you make up that rule? If it was true, which it is not, the kids who play volleyball would get the same accomodations at the Univ of Louisville as the basketball team does, which they do not. Hell, at a b-ball school, the football team doesn't get near the perks that the b-ball team does.
As to schools making money off athletic programs, you are so far off track you will never ever be able to get back on. Again, let me cite some info for you about the Univ of Louisville (local school whose finances are published yearly in the Courier-Journal) b-ball team. They make more money on that program than all the others put together, gross and net profit, that is. The rest of the sports is just gravy for the school. Ask Ramy who is the most profitable sports school in the state of KY, and he will tell you that, contrary to popular (but uninformed belief) its not the Univ of KY, although they make a fortune on sports.
Will not even address the vitriolic spewing about tOSU. Where are you getting your insider info re: rules violations? Making that up along the way, I would assume. If you have any proof, please cite, if not, then why continue your rants?
Ever known anybody who got an MD? Four years of HARD college classes at your own expense. Two more years of VERY HARD medical school classes at your expense. Then two years of, guess what boys and girls, UNCOMPENSATED WORK for an ULTRA-PROFITABLE COLLEGE HOSPITAL, while you still pay tuition. Then three more years of 60 hour per week weeks while being paid $35K or so, again for an ULTRA-PROFITABLE COLLEGE. Then, at no earlier than age 32, you might get to make a nice upper-middle class living.
Some friends are MDs and I will inform them that they did what you say. Once again, you are simply making up "facts" to make it sound like you actually know what you are talking about. Also, upper-middle class <> over a million / year for a typical surgeon, which does take that long.
In fact, any medical profession involves free work in a university hospital. Even nursing, even being an X-Ray tech.
OMG! You are almost accurate about something! The rotations that nurses do are a small part compared to the classroom training they receive. (Wife is a nurse, RN with advanced degrees, you don't want to debate these issues.)

Fact is, yes, universities make money. And fact is, if you want to be something, you work for free for a while.

Universities make money? Maybe Phoenix University On-line and its ilk, but real schools are lucky to break even. The big-time schools make money on some sports, but the sports departments are separate from the academic areas, hence the "foundations."
