"ERRORS WITH EXISTING RECORDING TIMERS
If you receive reports from a Subscriber that their scheduled recordings no longer seem to be working, please have them clear and reset all preexisting recording events and timers. The issue should be resolved once they attempt to create the new timers for the same programming."
Nope that doesn't work. This morning i deleted a timer, even though it was in the scheduled listing, it was then (correctly) not in the scheduled listing. I recreated the timer. It then was in the scheduled listing. Got home today and go into the recordings, NO PROGRAM, even though if i go into the scheduled listings and roll back up it shows it in there.
I understand a show not recording because of name changes, but this has nothing to do with any of that. This is just that for whatever reason the recorder doesn't record.
How does all that work with Dish Pass or Seek and Record timers on partial title or description matches? The guide doesn't work on names, your searches do. The guide with the DVR works on ID data. That's why even when there are no ongoing problems with the guide a show that says new may not record or when it does not show new it does record. The ID data is wrong or perhaps missing.
The DVR is going on what the ID data says and how it is marked. No matter what the title says or the info printed the DVR has to see the correct ID data to act correctly. The tittle and description is for us to make decisions, the ID data is for the DVR to make decisions. That is what is being done now by ROVI.
That's not how my Dish Pass timers work. If I set up one for "Shaft", I'd get both versions, and any other show or movie with "shaft" in the title, which has always been my preferred behavior. Same with searching for actor/actress names.
Almost all of my timers are Dish Pass. More flexible and I'd rather cast a wide net and gather more than I expect than not get what I expect.
My point in bringing this all up is I wonder if Seek timers would be a workable solution to the program ID problem plaguing regular DVR timers?
As well they should. If Gracenote is providing the guide data with opinions in it, then there is an inherent conflict of interest. Nielsen is supposed to objectively monitor the ratings, but now with the Gracenote guide data, they have the ability to influence the ratings by affecting potential viewers' opinions of the shows when they read the descriptions.BTW Nielsen who owns Gracenote now is having multiple problems overall - may lose the viewer ratings contract with the Networks.
