What do i do to receive local HD?

My local fox station has HD, they broadcast it free over the air. How do i recieve the signal? Do I need an external antenna? Or do i need DISH to install the HD dish to recieve the channel?

I dont know about dish, i also know you can prolly get a DNS waiver. if you dont know what that is, its a Distant network. Im hoping a rep from Dish jumps in this comment at anytime.

If you want to call yourself "Mr. DirecTV" you might want to give more accurate answers about the service you imply your are representing.

Dish Network has satellite delivered locals in 29 select (mostly larger) markets. The Dish Network HD receivers are also capable of receiving local HD signals from an over-the-air antenna. Due to legal action, Dish Network is prohibited from offering HD DNS.

If Dish Network offers satellite delivered HD locals, you would need a mpeg4 compatible HD receiver (211, 411, or 622) and a Dish 1000, Dish 1000+, or a Dish 500 + a 2nd dish pointing at the 61.5 satellite location depending on where you are located.

DirectTV has satellite delivered locals in 49 select (including all top 35) markets. The DirecTV HD receivers are also capable of receiving local HD signals from an over-the-air antenna. DirecTV offer HD DNS from New York and LA to those who qualify.

If DirecTV offers HD locals, you would need an mpeg 4 HD receiver (H20, HR20) and a 5LNB dish. (New York and LA HD are still available on legacy mpeg2 HD receivers and 3LNB dishes.)

You're posting in the Dish HD forum, I presume you have a Dish HD receiver. You need an antenna plugged into the 8VSB antenna port. Depending on how close the towers are, you could start with rabbit ears but an outdoor antenna will do better in general. If you have a Dish SD receiver, those don't have an OTA tuner so you want to run the antenna direct to the TV's digital tuner.

This website www.antennaweb.org will help you determine what kind of antenna you need, put in your address and it will figure it out for you.

You need to give us some more information about your current set-up for us to help you better. Do you have any Dish equipment now? I assume you have the ability to see a HDTV picture, but does your TV have a built-in ATSC or HDTV tuner? You will need to go to www.antennaweb.org to determine what type of antenna to get, but then you need to hook the antenna into something that could then decode those signals. Not all HDTV's can do this. If your TV can handle this then you hook up the right antenna to your TV, point it in the right direction and you've got free HDTV. If you already have Dish equipment you have a few more options and the opportunity to get more HDTV then what you simply get off the air.

i have a Westinghouse 32 inch (ltv-32-w3hd). Right now i only have a 311 receiver. Thinking about going to DishHD.

OK - sullic82 - You need to give people some better info to help them help you. If you're looking to watch your local FOX station in HD (and any others, probably), you can do that with an antenna. Your particular TV has a built in ATSC tuner, so it can receive digital signals. Now, we can't help you with what kind of antenna unless we know where you live. But, just like Pepper mentioned in an earlier post, www.antennaweb.org can help. Go to that site, enter your address and that site will tell you what digital stations are available, where their transmission towers are relative to your house and how far away you are. Based on these factors, it can recommend what to look for in an antenna.

Now, You could also upgrade your Dish equipment, but presently, Dish only provides local network feeds in HD for a few select markets. If you're not in one of those markets, you're limited to what you can do with an antenna.

Now, I have no idea why you're now asking about a DVD player, but I happen to have that particular model, and I'm quite happy with it. HDMI output is great, it is pretty fast, though the menus are a bit confusing. For the price, as long as you stick with HDMI, its a good player. It is a lot less attractive when sending 480p over component, though.

I am not sure how accurate antennae web site is on digital signals. In my home zip 13669, it says I only get one PBS (WNPE)station 30 miles away. In fact I get(about 50 miles away) WWNY-DT, WWTI-DT, WPBS-DT, WCFE-PBS, and CBOT_DT. (Though I believe antenna web never finds canadian stations.)

In my winter Florida home zip 33884 it does not find about 6 DT stations that I get perfectly fine.
