First timer -

I've been a DirecTV /TIVO user since '97 (Phase 2 dual lnb dish) and a home remodeling effort has forced me to re position my dish. I figured it was time to do an upgrade to HD if I have to move my dish so I contacted DirecTV and will have the following installed on July 4th

HR20-DVR
Zinwell WB68

My question is what dish should i be sure is being installed? I have read on dbsforum that I should get the Slimline but when I attempt to confirm my work order with the local installer they say Ku/Ka dish but they won't clarify if it is slimline. From what i can tell there is AT-9 and AU9-S (slimline). Will it matter to me? I am in NoVa and expect to get locals via dish (not ota). Any advice for a long time devoted Directv/TIVO user making the move to HD?

Here's hoping the dual lb and ff issues i have been reading about don't make me regret the decision

Unless your local still has them, the Slimline is the standard 5 LNB dish going forward. And since you are getting HD, I am 99% positive it will be the Slimline. I always reserve the right for that 1% odd ball chance. You never know with local installers.

:welcome BTW

deanethomp, Brewer,
Weather the slimline is the standard or not, they will give you the AT-9 IF they still have them in stock.

deanethomp,
Don't worry, they both work great.
I just installed a AT-9 last week for my Dad, it was a piece of cake once we found a good location.

Uh didnt I say that.

After reading your post I took it as you were saying he has a 99% chance of getting a slimline.

I think there are still alot of AT-9's out there, but I guess it just depends on where he's at and which they are currently installing.

Personally, I think it's closer to 85 %, but it's not worth debating....

Now wouldn't it be a hoot if they show up with a 3 LNB dish and prove us all wrong. Of course wouldnt be too funny for deane.

Sh@@ they just cut our order to send to N.VA. Those boy either install a KAKU or Round dish. That phase 3 is almost a thing of the past up there.:)

How did you get a July 4th install date.? I had to wait untill the 6th for my DVR install. Directv says they aren't doing any installs on the 4th. And yes you are getting a slimline.Directv no longer installs old 5lnb dish.Too many call backs from the arm holding the 2 lnbs breaking off. Anyone getting an HD install IS getting a slimline.

I would guess then that all of the locals are on 101, like Washington and Baltimore?

We were just told that July 4th is a MANDATORY work day for us...apparently we're pretty hammered for the next week or so.

Really? Even if there is still parts of the country with stock of those monsters, you'd think they'd avoid them because of the issues with the jumper connectors on the LNB.

There are a lot of other reasons for the Phase III, but I guess no hablamos espanol en norte VA. :)

Directv tech. Told me when he installed my slimline in Febuary ,That Directv does not install anything for HD but the Slimline Dish. Who know's how much thats true. But everything he has told me in the past has happend exactly the way he said it would. Now Directv I can't say that about.

I've had mine for 9 months without any jumper issues.
You mention the Monster dishes, they really are not that different than the so called slimline. The slimline is shorter and wider, the AT-9 is more square, no big deal, they both work well.

Hemi,
This is the first I have ever heard of this, if they would like to come out and replace the AT-9 with the AU-9 that would be fine, but I doubt thats going to happen any time soon.

Too many call backs from the arm holding the 2 lnbs breaking off.
