The very first line of the link article says:
"The Big Ten’s decision to spurn Notre Dame’s final attempt to join in 1926 hardened the independent spirit of the university"
Not too good, just don't have any reason to. For some reason the Big Ten people take it as an insult that Notre Dame dared turn down their invite.
Same can be said about Ohio St. or any number of teams with inflated egos.
Mainly they want to pick and choose who they play and any contract they want the money to themselves ...
Except, when they decided for unknown reasons to join the ACC they were required to take on 4-5 games against ACC teams (which only makes sense) ...
They can continue to be independent , no big deal, they lose money and placement within the Playoffs when and if they are good enough to qualify.
You are right about the Buckeyes and Bama and the Other teams that are Very good ... people dislike many of them, because they are good.
Georgia isn't there yet, but if they continue to play at a Top level they will be in the same boat.
ND just rubs people the wrong way because they feel they should be there, whenever they are good at all ...
ND really should not have been in the playoffs when they were, but then the Playoffs committee isn't always correct with thier placements ...
Matter of Fact I think they more of less, put in who they WANT to play ....
There was a year that OSU should not have gotten in as well as Bama shouldn't have been in.
Some teams get in because they know they will be good ratings, some get in because of Name and others get in because they are an upstart and want to see what would happen.
That will all come to an end soon when they make College Football boring and put
12 or even 16 teams in ...
That will be the end of Football as we know it.
The NIL and the Transfer Pool has started that roll and the expansion will just continue its demise.
