I wrote and asked if Dish ever plans to support an external drive on the 622. Here is the response.. How do we upgrade?

Mr. Kushner,

Thank you for the email. The USB port was created to download
recordings on to the pocket dish. The recording time is based on the
hard drive inside the receiver, so that would need to be replaced or
upgraded, to add more recording time.

Sincerely,

I would be willing to bet they will support external USB drives on the 622 in the future. There have been rumors that they are testing it on the 942 already.

Mr Laslo said there are NO PLANS to support an external drive. I then wrote asking him about more time and he said no one wants it. here is his message.

Maybe he needs to hear from those of us that find 30 hours not enough.

Every DVR that we have released has had more GB than the last. If we
see a demand that more space is needed we will address that. As of
right now, the 622 will hold 200 hours of Standard Def and 30 hours of
HD. How much room are you looking for or would need? I haven't heard
from any of my consumers requesting more space or a larger hard drive.
Thanks,
David Laslo

Ok. I guess your comments confused me.

Hopefully Dish will address this in the future a 25 hours for HD is
nothing. I have Tivos with 300 GB drives and my Comcast
8300HD box has a 200 inside and a 300 External.

With more channels going to HD, do they really think that 30 hours is going to be enough???

Exactly my point. Here is how I responded and I didn't get a reply.

"Obviously most people need more then 30 especially as HD grows. If there is 200 standard and only 30 HD doesn't that seem lopsided when you promote being the biggest HD supplier and the 622 is considered a High Def DVR?

There are many people wanting more space. Just check the forums .

Brian"

I am pretty sure this guy is confused. They announced in one of the tech chats that they were working on external hard drive support. Trust me, they are testing this option now. When we will see it is a different question.

What is going to happen to 121?
