Can someone please explain what the QAM QBOX is, and what it actually does?
It is my understanding that it allows for an apartment building or MDU to distribute SAT signals over existing coax into a home, then connect this QBOX to convert the signal back to a DISH SAT signal? Also, how will this relate to the supposedly "new qbox" that DISH just announced to allow HD in a QAM distribution? Also, does this technology allow a single DISH 1000 installed on the building to distribute SAT signals to multiple apartments (assuming proper headend equipment)? Thank you

QAM is the method of encoding digital signal used by most cable systems. QAM box is used by apartment systems similarly, satellite dish receives signal, but uses QAM instead of 8vsb encoding to send programming to receiver.

In an apartment complex, the QPSK modulated satellite frequencies are converted to QAM modulated frequencies that are then assigned to a standard cable TV channel. A standard cable ready TV cannot receive these channels without a QAM receiver. Dishnetwork has some receivers that are QAM receivers and a MDU subscriber can get all of the Dish packages just as if they had their on dish. However what they decided to do was utilize their standard QPSK receivers by developing a Q Box which is a small rectangular device that interfaces QAM signals to QPSK receiver. However the QPSK box must be Q box ready. You can't take any QPSK receiver and use a Q box.
