Dear Friends,

It's been over 21 years since I have created SatelliteGuys. A place I created for friends to help friends with their satellite services.

Satellite was a technology that we saw grow and bloom before our eyes. We went from seeing satellite offer channels the cable companies didn't. We saw Satellite offer channel in High-Definition years before they were offered on cable. We have also seen Satellite offer 4K programming long before it was available on cable. With that said we also have seen technologies improved so much that we now can watch almost any channel anywhere on a device in the palm of our hands!

Like the technologies have changed, SatelliteGuys has changed as well, and has turned into a forum where you can discuss just about anything. Want to talk about sports? We have a forum for it. Want to talk about cooking, we have a forum about it, want to talk about Internet Television? Yup we have a forum about it! As things have changed so have we.

Over the past few months I have reached out to a few members who were no longer active here at SatelliteGuys and asked them why they stopped visiting us and the answer I got from them all the same answer, they no longer have Satellite anymore.

Because of our "SatelliteGuys" name it seems people think that we are only just about Satellite, nothing could be further from the truth.

While we intend to remain the source for Satellite News, information and help. But we also intend to let the world know that we are more than just satellite. Today you may have noticed that our logo has changed slightly and added the words "Friendly Tech Talk"

I have always envisioned SatelliteGuys as a friendly neighborhood tavern, a place where friends gather to talk to others about all kinds of things and the work to get known as Friendly Tech Talk is a push to try getting more people to know we are here and we are so much more than Satellite.

We have purchased the "FriendlyTechTalk.COM" domain and over time we plan to move to it. It should be noted that the SatelliteGuys.US domain will continue to live on as well. I will note that I have run into some technical issues and found out I cannot just change the forum software over to the new domain, in addition if we change the name in our forum software, many of our add ins for the software will stop working as they are registered to the SatelliteGuys domain name. Additionally, there are issues with the search indexes, as it may mark already indexed items as duplicates, and they may penalize us. I have also found out that ad serving to the new domain name may have issues and the ad agencies may have to approve the new domain name as well. I have a lot of work to do here.

I have been talking to our supporting Pub Members, and we have some ideas for some new forums and some of these members have even offered to help run those forums. We need more of this… we need your ideas on how we can bring more people in and keep them here. So, if you have any ideas, please let us know!

As you may have noticed we had server issues over a month ago. But thanks to the support of our Pub Members, we were able to move to a brand-new server, and we have never been faster than we are right now!

Let's talk about ads for a second. While if you look at our traffic here on SatelliteGuys we are still seeing almost 2 million page views a month, but our ad revenue has dropped lick a rock. In all honesty last month, we earned only $23.61 in Google AdSense revenue. If it were not for the very kind support of our supporting Pub Members we would not be here. I have been paying out of my own pocket when funds are short to keep us going. In deep talks with my wife, we have talked about closing the doors, however my wife has encouraged me to continue and push forward.

I am honestly not sure about what to do about the ads. I am no fan of ads myself. But we need them to pay the bills. I am considering an idea to make the site ad free for all, and instead more to a donation system with a set goal for each month.

My biggest concern about this is I fear that only a few big-hearted members will donate, and it will only be these same people donating again and again. My wife tells me that it is up to them, and I shouldn't worry about it. But I do worry about it.

I know some of you may be well off financially, but I see everyone here as the same. I don't care if you are white, black, yellow, green, rich or poor. I don't care who you voted for, and I don't care who you sleep with. Here at SatelliteGuys I feel we are all the same. In fact, I can go as far as saying I love you all here no matter who you are or no matter what you claim to be.

Over the past 21 years I have been able to meet many of you but there are so many more that you haven't met. And no matter if we have met or not, I consider all of you to be part of our SatelliteGuys Family.

Besides the money I need more help from you. I need you to spread the word about us. If you see something interesting, please help us by sharing links on other social media places such as Facebook and Reddit. We NEED YOU to spread the word about us. Let folks know that we are so much more than just Satellite!

We have the server, we have the technology, we have the bandwidth, please let the world know about us! Over the next few months as we transition to FriendlyTechTalk.COM we need you to get the word out.

I may have created this site, but it has been run by an amazing group of volunteers based on ideas by our members! As you can see our staff has done an amazing job of working to keep the site spam free, and a friendly place to discuss just about anything. Look around at other forums and then look at us. I don't think you will find a better run, informative, friendly and faster forum. A big thank you to our staff.

Again if anyone has any ideas, PLEASE let me know. This is not just my site; it is your site! And when our name changes it is very important to me that we will always be known as SatelliteGuys as well. We have had a hell of history over the past 21 years. Let's make some more!

Thank you for your support, ideas and more importantly thank you for being here!

Spread the word!

TVRadioPeople.com is available as is TVRadioTalk.com.
Which would do nothing to attract the under 40 crowd to the site.

The same for having Satellite as the site name, the world is moving on from Traditional Service, a lot faster than I anticipated.

Starting to get a little nervous for scripted material, all the under 35 age range seem to care about, is YouTube and Tik Tok, my daughter included.

Any word on The Pit making it through the transition? It's hard to consider any site 'friendly' when there's a section with sanctioned hate, bigotry, misgendering, etc, regardless of the guardrails erected to silo it off.
The pit is its own walled garden (or as some call it a rubber room). To see it you have to check in to it. And unlike the Hotel California you can check out when you want. It does not effect the rest of the site. :D

As far as other domains go there are millions available. My wife and I came up with all kinds of ideas and I went with the one I thought explained the site best. As I said SatelliteGuys.US will always work when we do change things.

I have been in meetings all afternoon here at work, and came back to find a number of people donated, thank you. This message was not to seek donations at this time, just wanted to let folks know what's going on. But thank you none the less. All money received goes back into the site, not in my pocket. So again THANK YOU!

You definitely have a point, but I'll counter that maybe he should keep it for them, (at least they tend to KEEP IT in there, unlike a few others here and there) BUT, make it a PAY forum, with a on-going subscription cost, if that can be done. Not too cheap OR expensive either, and let the die-hards make the ultimate decision as to whether it stays or goes. That will be based on who is willing to pay the subscription to keep it alive.

Even IF Scott only keeps the price high enough to at least cover the costs of the rest of the site, that could be a win/win situation.

That'd kill it, so I'd be all for that. I disagree that it doesn't impact any other parts of the site, as the explicit endorsement of some of the things discussed there reflects on others and even Scott himself when he's gotten involved. IMO should be a respectful no politics outside of the context of threads across the forum and there simply shouldn't be a place for hate and bigotry on the site at all.

I feel like I've heard this story before, when DSLReports tried to rebrand to BroadbandReports. It would be wise to keep both domains active for sure.

As to the ads, I will say, I keep JavaScript disabled for this site except to post and I do use an adblocker. They're not too terrible on a desktop but on Safari on iPhone they make the site damn near unusable. Seriously, disable JavaScript on your iPhone (if you've got one) and try the site with and without it, night and day.

I do like the site, and probably would donate periodically if it meant keeping it alive. I was sad to see DSLReports go and would hate to lose this place too. Thanks for keeping it alive.

They should pay me to go in there.

I really love this site. I look forward to coming here several times a day. If it went away, I (and others, I'm sure) would miss it immensely. I agree, thanks for keeping it alive and I will also donate as finances permit.
