Innovation is getting pretty difficult at this point in addition to being rather expensive. That's where you lose by going with a platform that has only one participant.

Apple needs more engineers who are visionary about things that matter to everyone. The Air Pod hearing aid feature is getting closer to valuable innovation than most things they've done in the last ten years (or the menstrual cycle stuff with the Watch if you're of the distaff gender of child-bearing age).

Yes the price of new phones is expensive but my first cell phone was $1500 and that was in 1986 dollars so overall you can get a lot more for less.
