After nearly 13 years Dish & I are parting ways at my parents home in early June. I'm making the switch to Direct due to Dish's lack of any RSN's in the New York area. Its a change I've been very reluctant to make but all good things must come to an end. I'll still have Dish at my home and I guess I'll be spending more time at my parents. Any advice on canceling it? My contract expires on June 3rd so should I cancel Dish on that date and then make my arrangements to get Direct or make those arrangements now for an install date on or about the 3rd. Not sure what if any difference it all makes but I thought I'd see what you all had to say. Thanks in advance. Much appreciated.

Well you will be very happy with Directv when it comes to NY sports.

When you place your order with Directv you will need to pay for it that day.
Depending on your credit and equipment you want will determin your upfront cost, could be nothing, might be $500.

What type of equipment do you want?
How about programming?

I'm going to go with the Choice Ultimate Package and I want to do the Whole Home DVR along with 3 additional HD Receivers. Yeah I'm psyched to be able to watch NY Sports again. My upfront cost should only be $99 for the equipment. It baffles me as to why Dish has let the NY sports market go. Its the single reason I got Dish 13 years ago. Sports often means more to people then any other type of entertainment. I guess they figure with the international channels they get enough subscribers in the NY area. The only thing I wish Direct offered would be something like the Hopper where all your tvs had the ability to pause and rewind live tv with the whole home DVR feature. Its cause of the Hopper I kept Dish at my home. It really is pretty impressive.

When/if Direct ever gets the RVU box out the door, you could have an HR34 with its 5 tuners and then RVU boxes at the other locations. Then it would all be centralized management ala` the Hopper/Joey situation.

As it is, it is a bit of a PITA to manage multiple receivers/DVRs with the way D* has it now. If you go with an HR34 with all receivers, then you can set recordings and most other things with the receiver. But you can't use trickplay with live events. A workaround, imo, is to start a recording of the live event and wait a little bit and then start watching the recording. Then you have trickplay available.

I know it may sound dumb, but if you like Dish so much, instead of switching to Directv, did you Try a RoKu and maybe subscribe to a sports pack. Even Smart TV's or even blue rays can subscribe to MLB, NHL,or NBA.

Just a thought, sure it will cost you some money, but you'll get every game. RSN's have nothing to do with NFL so your not gaining anything by switching because of say the Giants or Jets.( Unless you want NFL ST)

If you want to Pause and rewind Live tv in all 3 rooms, then yes you need 3 HD DVRs. That will cost you $300 upfront.

I didn't like that idea either, so I got the HR34, and another HR23 for my bedroom. And 2 remote rooms just have H25's
But honestly , after playing with the remote rooms, I should have saved the $150 extra from the Hr23 and just got the H25, Cause as long as you hit record, you can do what you want still..

Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately you don't get local RSN's with any of the sports packs you suggested. So even if I got the MLB, NBA, or NHL pack all the NY teams would be blacked out. For me to get them that way, I'd have to move out of the NY market.

Figures, always some loophole

It wouldn't solve his problem. for with these sprots pacakges that you get on Roku like MLB.tv and the others only gives you out of market teams. He still wouln'dt have access to NYC sports teams. Good idea other wise.

Hey OP, I am also leaving Dish due the the lack of NY RSN's. I feel your pain. Don't you just love it when the Yanks are on ESPN and that even gets blacked out.
I also hate to leave Dish, as other than the lack of RSN's, I really have no complaints. They have always been really fair to me, and the service is good. I am looking forward to having HR 34. From my understanding all you have to do to pause T.V. from the H25's, is tell it to record the show, and then just start the recording and then you can pause it that way. Not really a big deal.
Good luck with the switch. I look forward to reading how you make out with D*. I have to wait until July 25th to switch. I might wind up doing it sooner, and just paying the $20 ETF to Dish though. It depends on how much I miss baseball in the next few weeks.

I say hang him high.............. :D

lol... Sorry watching Hatfield-McCoys.........

Well that is not 100% true. There are vpn services that will solve that problem....

One thought that I didn't see mentioned - if you have multiple leased receivers, drop all but one about a week before you cancel, so you can return the extras free and will only be charged shipping on the last one.

Otherwise, Dish will charge you $15 per receiver to return all of them at cancellation.

Do i have a bad Joey?

Why can't I watch TV when the guide downloads.
