Canceling Dish, any advice?

Hey OP, I am also leaving Dish due the the lack of NY RSN's. I feel your pain. Don't you just love it when the Yanks are on ESPN and that even gets blacked out.
I also hate to leave Dish, as other than the lack of RSN's, I really have no complaints. They have always been really fair to me, and the service is good. I am looking forward to having HR 34. From my understanding all you have to do to pause T.V. from the H25's, is tell it to record the show, and then just start the recording and then you can pause it that way. Not really a big deal.
Good luck with the switch. I look forward to reading how you make out with D*. I have to wait until July 25th to switch. I might wind up doing it sooner, and just paying the $20 ETF to Dish though. It depends on how much I miss baseball in the next few weeks.

So I just made the call to cancel Dish at my parents and the customer service rep was great. She did try to keep me by offering me some additional credits and premium channels but when I informed of my reason to leave Dish, she understood. Its hard for them to convince you to stay when your leaving for something that they do not offer. I asked that she please inform whoever is listening about the complete lack of RSN's in NY.

As for the switch to Direct, the install was done on Friday and from what I've heard, my parents and younger brother are loving it. Personally I can't wait to test it out. The Yanks, Mets, Rangers, Islanders, Devils, Knicks, and Nets are all back on or at least when their respective seasons resume.

Its a shame that Dish doesn't see the importance of sports. One could argue that sports mean more then movies when selecting a provider considering that their are so many other ways to get movies into your home. This nonsense that they are cheaper means nothing when you don't get the same slate of channels. If AMC goes dark and the major networks decided they don't want Dish transmitting their signals when their contracts expire due to the whole Auto Hop feature, what then? No local programming. I highly doubt my bill go down by double digits and even if it did, who cares? Dish really needs to rethink its position when playing hardball with these companies.

All you people complying about no NYC ran or no all day hd on your ran be thankful you don't live i'm Philly.

If you have DISH or Direct you'll never get your local rsn.Already as long as Comcast has their way.

So don't complain and be happy with what you have.

My apologies but I have every right to complain, as do you. How is your situation any different? You have Dish & you want to watch your teams on Dish. I'd like to do the same.

There is a difference in my case. For me it isn't DISH's fault.Same with Direct.Comcast won't sell it to them or they are asking way to muchI hear they ask more than anyone else would pay.

You already can go to Direct out wait for DISH to carry it again.Several they did carry it in the past.

You really think Dish would pay for CSN Philly even if they could?
Don't hold your breath! Dish makes it really clear they they have no intrest in sports.
If it means that much to you switch to cable!

You knew signing up with Dish that CSN philly was not an option! Thats the difference!

So I have more sympathy for someone who signed up with Dish cause they had most of their RSN's but then dropped them like a bad habit durring their 24 month commitment.

Pays to start from the beginning.

... if you start from the beginning then you see the post about getting the Roku player then afterwards you see the OPs reason for not. So you're statement is irrelevant. You should have said it pays to read it all.

One thought that I didn't see mentioned - if you have multiple leased receivers, drop all but one about a week before you cancel, so you can return the extras free and will only be charged shipping on the last one.

Otherwise, Dish will charge you $15 per receiver to return all of them at cancellation.

Or he could tell dish to send out a tech to deinstall the system, charge him only $15 for the visit but don't have to worry with ups and all that crap.

Dish pays for CSTNO. So yes they would if price was reasonable.

Just because you value sports over everything else doesn't mean that's true for the majority....

I think that majority wanting sports is true especially for the male under 50 group. From what I have read here on this site and other sites there are plenty of folks that care very little about sports. However, there are many more that do love watching sports of some kind on TV. Right now the tennis crowd is enjoying the French Open. Over the weekend the golf crowd got to watch Tiger win Jack's Memorial Tournament. Millions tuned in for their local baseball team. The Women's Soft Ball World Series is now being watched by lots of people. The Men's College World Series is now on also. How about the NBA Championships being played right now. How many millions watch their favorite college football team on Saturdays throughout the Fall? The list goes on and on. We get plenty of sports haters that chime in here but they are such a small minority on a national basis.

I really don't care that I don't get my rsn.I just mentioned it for not ever having a chance to feet it is worse than not having fill time hd.

Plus I can watch my Phillies with mlb.TV on my TV by easy of my PC.Just not fair to others in my DNA who have ST.

Lets look at this realistically... Directv offers NY RSN's. They have 20 million subs. How many of those are actually watching those RSN's?

So, if an event on these RSN's have say 10 million viewers, being between all providers that offer it, that would mean less than half of their subs care about it.

So that's a bad example because RSN's are not availlable to all. So lets say ESPN. Same applies.

I'm sorry but who said I value sports over everything else? Ironically you quote me but draw your own conclusions based on my comment. Last time I checked, the populous spends quite a bit on sports when you consider everything from the pros to high school so I fail to see how I'm in the minority. In the end we all pay for channels we don't care for. I don't watch a majority of the channels I get but what can you do but pay for them anyway. Afterall they are included with the package. I just don't understand how when it comes to sports, all the anti sports people are quick to point out how they don't want to pay for it cause they don't watch it. However its okay for people like me to pay for channels you watch. All I ask is for you to kindly pay for channels I watch in return. & when all is said and done, our bills go up anyway so I fail to see the issue. If my bill is going up $3, why not just go up $5 and give everyone what they want?

When/if Direct ever gets the RVU box out the door, you could have an HR34 with its 5 tuners and then RVU boxes at the other locations. Then it would all be centralized management ala` the Hopper/Joey situation.

As it is, it is a bit of a PITA to manage multiple receivers/DVRs with the way D* has it now. If you go with an HR34 with all receivers, then you can set recordings and most other things with the receiver. But you can't use trickplay with live events. A workaround, imo, is to start a recording of the live event and wait a little bit and then start watching the recording. Then you have trickplay available.
What's an RVU?

Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately you don't get local RSN's with any of the sports packs you suggested. So even if I got the MLB, NBA, or NHL pack all the NY teams would be blacked out. For me to get them that way, I'd have to move out of the NY market.

That's not correct. With Choice Extra, Ultimate and Premier, you get your local RSN's included. SO you would see YES, MSG and SNY....go to directv.com and see for yourself

He said "instead of switching to DirecTV." It is correct. To use a Roku and a sports pack subscription, the local NY games in the NY market would be blacked out, short of using a VPN or proxy service.

Do i have a bad Joey?

Why can't I watch TV when the guide downloads.
