CBS Will Drop Dish If Auto Hop Stays

Don't get me wrong. I love the primetime anytime and autohop. This way I get to watch shows that otherwise I might have missed. The point I'm trying to make is most people will watch the shows the day they air, comercials and all. The networks have the chance for the comercials to be seen on that day. They are expecting too much to want to control what has been recorded.

I am beginning to think Dish is getting the USB OTA over the Air tuner ready for release not because we want it for sub channels but to help battle CBS when it is pulled.

Dish will just give out USB tuners in markets it pulled from so Dish customers can watch CBS Free over the air.

Except for the timing aspect of this. Unless the CBS O&O stations are up for renewal soon, this will drag on for months. Between trial and appeals, it'll be a while. Also, as has been mentioned many times, the Hopper is still currently a minuscule percentage of Dish customers' households, so an OTA tuner for it wouldn't help most of the affected people. Having OTA is a great backup for when there's a dispute, but I don't think Dish is preparing the module just with that in mind.

Maybe so , but it sure doesn't hurt to have ota ,just in time for a possible drop of CBS in certain markets. Timing is everything.

Why do i think it may go backwards here and it may be cheaper for Dish Or Directv to install an OTA antenna for every customer (Again, Before locals were offered) Than make these god awful re-transmission agreements? Im sure CBS would love that.

If they even contemplate such a move, they first need to fix the guide for all those subchannels, as well as leaving the guide up on OTA channels while the sat channels disappear or go to a slate. My subchannels (MHz and Ion) have been absent since the digital transition. (They were fine before!)

Now that would run into a lot of $$$.Decent antennas don't come cheap.Charlie said most of his customers lives on ranches or farms so that would require some big antennas.

Yea but that would still be costly to cover every market.

Those little itty bitty antenna's probably cost what, $1 each? They can use coat hangers (heck, half a coat hanger) and get them in bulk for the cost of one monthly fee that the broadcasters charge. They would not need much to pick up locals close to the towers. It would cost more for the equipment to transfer the video over the internet.

The only reason Claude (or anyone else) hates Dish Network, is because they've worked with (or for) them. That's reason enough to hate Dish Network.

that's the problem... aereo is retransmitting the signal and not paying the networks anything. Hasn't really even gone through the courts yet.

If Dish started doing that now, they'd just get sued under yet another case. lol

Thus far Aereo as won in court over a temporary injunction. The screwed up rules broadcasters have in place allow Aereo to work. Such a system is fairly inexpensive if the property for all the antennas is reasonably priced.

Broadcasters have appealed and are going to court soon.

Dish Network, so far, can do the Aereo thing and broadcast any network they choose that wants to give them rentrans issues in that manner, until they are told in court not to do so, correct? They would have to broadcast it via broadband though I would assume.

Maybe I should call old Les up and let him know that if DISH wins in court (and I expect them to) that I am hearing that DIRECTV has its Auto Skip technology all ready to go and they plan on calling it the Genie and it could be sent to DIRECTV boxes as soon as the ruling is released. (In fact if you search DIRECTV has already trademarked the name.

Such wussies they let E do all the battles then come in w/ their version.

I don't find the Hopper system compelling to own but even if CBS pulled the network and all affiliates followed, using the 722k with 2 OTA tuners still allows me to see the CBS program and skip ahead the commercials. I always watch my programming about 20 minutes delay per hour off OTA tuner anyway. Dish satellite locals looks visibly fuzzier and the sound is more compressed than viewing from local OTA tuner anyway. The only thing Hopper would give me is a stupid looking Kangaroo on my DVR. I can live without that. Of course not everybody has an easy path to over the air stations I happen to be lucky in this case because I can see my over the air broadcast antennas from my house roof. I suspect that most people will probably require really expensive antennas to do OTA. Therefore the over the air solution is probabably only good for a small percentage of the subscribers.

I agree that CBS would be making a big mistake pulling all from Dish. I also think that a move like this could be an FCC violation or at least call for an FCC decision and CBS would lose. While I don't care for Hopper personally, I think Dish in this case has the upper hand.

Also, I've always said the Broadcast TV business model is broke since the mid 80's. Their refusal to modify their business model from the 30 sec spot to a diversified
revenue stream and integrated advertising content will be the death of the industry.
