That is a very good question? I have heard that some Directv Support personal do monitor dbstalk.com. But I guess D* lawyers are not hearing their customers on getting contracts for non Premium subscribers. This is my opinion.

Unless they start removing HDPPV, it's going to be tough until D14 is launched in 2013. There's about 12 open slots left, and there's talk of a few more Cinemax HD's, truTV hd, and some more RSN's. Some stupid "push VOD" service is hogging up a load of bandwidth on D12. Hopefully this means they could remove some linear HD PPV as it starts to become redundant.

Another thing they could do is slightly increase transponder loading (6 or 7 HD's per TP VS 5 as done today). I'm fine if bandwidth needs to be managed for select channels. Even if say E!, DIY, TCM and some others was downressed to 1440x1080 or 1024x720, it still beats the overcompressed muddy 480x480 versions they have today. Then when D14 is launched, rebalance the bandwidth to restore full res again. At least that would get us SOMETHING.

What they need to do is recall all of the SD equipment and go 100% HD. They can free up a ton of bandwidth by eliminating the SD duplicate streams and letting the receivers handle the downconversion. They'd also be able to knock the dishes back to one or two LNB's instead of five.

Agreed, but theres SOOOO much equipment to replace. Not to mention they still make and install MPEG2 sh!t, and that isn't helping. It's one thing if the old stuff was sunsetted, but it doesn't look to be the case.

As far as Dish Network... Yeah I would of loved to get them because they have the HD channel lineup that fits ME. However the installer could not get a reliable line of sight. As far as the HD-Lite... I wouldn't notice it at my viewing distance on my 42" TV. HD-Lite is better than SD-Lite any day. Plus they can keep their prized possessions (sports and premiums) just the way they are. My 6:1 or 7:1 per TP ratio would be for basics like E!, Style, DIY, AMC, TruTV, HI, ID, IFC, BBCA, TCM, HLN, Fuse, GSN, LMN, GMC, Fox Movies, Reelz, Sprout, The Hub, and a few of the others. Hell put QVC HD, HSN HD, NASA HD, CSPAN1 & 2 HD on an 8:1 compression ratio.

Then when D14 is available, rebalance that stuff to full res. My belief is something is better than nothing, and the demographics on many of those channels won't even be able to tell it's HD-Lite, but they WILL be able to tell the picture is better than it is today.

I hope they don't go all HD. We are SD and will be for as long as possible. Last thing we need is a two year commitment because we would have to upgrade our receivers and get a new dish...No thanks...we'll go to Canadian Satellite or even cable if that happens..

Is this above statement accurate? I thought all broadcast (non PPV & VOD) HD channels are max 1080i/720p (~1024x720)... not 1080p (1920x1080) unless it's over VOD. Which means we're already below 1440x1080 for transponder channels. Also, you would never change the resolution. That would completely screw up how the image renders on you TV. DTV would need to add in extra compression to increase stations per transponder. Or am I just crazy?

There is no reason in this day and age to not draw a line in the sand and say, all future receivers will be HD and we will be phasing out SD equipment over the next couple years. It would be worth the minimal churn (those clinging to late 90's technology) as it would allow focus on what should be their core business - high quality, high definition television.
