It sure helps them grow in subs?This is exactly what Dish does. They get something that costs what they consider a reasonable amount, and something that separates them from Direct or even Cable. They went for more National HD channels, more international channels, and this type of sports. Keep in mind, while you and I may not be the target of this, many of their international subscribers are.

It's the second most popular sport in the world and did you know your national pass time came from cricket? Do you think if only a few people were watching, Dish would bring these channels to lose money?
Not according to most of those that actually pay to watch US based TV.Smart move by Dish. Offer the IPL bait, and pull in customers from Directv, and comcast. I guess they would have looked at the # of people who subscribed to the world cup package , and made this move.

That is why you don't run a highly profitable business, and Charlie does. You and I have no idea how much profit is involved with International programming. When Dish went after the international program audience, it was hailed by analysts as an untapped segment of the viewing audience. YOU may not like or even know what Cricket is, I can guarantee many or most international subscribers do. I may not know just how many want it, but I can guarantee you have no idea at all. Bottom line, when they add English programming it is as much to satisfy subs as it is to attract new ones. You don't want to satisfy current International Subs. Dish does. And yes, it may get them some subscribers.

thats sad dish would rather get cricket rights instead of mlb network or when they could try and get nfl sunday ticket or split it with direct tv![]()
its a package with a high profit margin..the heck with what his customers wantYou also miss the point. It is not sad or anything. It is a package Dish believes people want, that Dish feels they can afford and sell.
Did everyone miss, this is a premium add on package, the cost borne by those who subscribe? Tell your high priced RSN to do that, and you can get it on Dish. Direct may end up getting back SNY, but it is taking a long time. Will they be next to stop paying ridicules prices? I think Direct has a much bigger stake in keeping SNY than Dish does as others have said. Yet, they certainly have not caved. I'm not suggesting they will not get it done, because of that importance, but it sure seems they have reached their limit also with the cost of RSN's.
DodgerKing means that if Dish were offered as a company in Europe and Asia where Cricket is popular it would make more sense. Offering it to US customers that subscribe to international packages (what we call international customers) isn't as profitable.
Well at least that's what I think he meant. I would post something about it but every weekend for the past month I've seen a group of kids (15 - 20) playing cricket on the lawn at a park not far from my house. It took me about ten minutes to figure out what they were even playing so I'm sure there is a market for this... just not sure it's enough to issue a press release for.
Cricket coverage is available Over the Air for free or as part of basic programming the case of cable and satellite in countries where it is played. So dish offering these in eastern hemisphere and trying to profit from it is out of question. Only in the U.S can you nickel and dime every sports package ( League pass for example), and get away with it.
Dish is not doing charity work by doing this. They sure make a ton of money from international channels and international sports packages.
Will you pay $30 for 10 channels? I am paying this for an international package.
