IIRC, Dish stated in their 10-K filing that they self-insure the launches.

And actually large corporations self-insure a lot of things, if they have a large cash flow.

Insurance companies make a profit on it, so why not do it yourself ?

Insurance is only needed when the possible cost of failure would severely disrupt the company (or individual).

PS This is why consumer advocates universally advise against buying those extra warranties. Over your lifetime, you will save far more than the cost of the one TV that goes bad early.

Given the number of Echostar satellite launch (and launch related) failures, why would you ever want to pay more?

That or because of AMC14 they cant get insured! Lets hope that Echostar 14 doesnt have the same fate as AMC14. Lets hope somone put an extra shamrock on that badboy!

AMC14 was not owned by Echostar. I doubt they would deny Echostar coverage because of it. However, there WERE some little insurance disagreements with Echostar in the past........

If you have $100 million in cash that is not needed, self insurance is best. There is a 95% chance the mission will be successful (based on past launches), why pay 10+% of the cost for insurance. The insurance companies want to make a healthy profit on it, so they they have to charge a lot more than the odds would dictate to be sure.

Insurance is needed if you cannot afford to take the loss. Dish has a lot of cash to cover things like this. Dish has self insured about 6-7 satellites now... They have a loss covered by now in insurance savings.

Just called the ILS hotline, Wich was last updated at 655est. 3rd burn & 4th burns completed nominally, The 5th burn begins about 5 hours later at 1155 est, which will place the bird into orbit on the belt. So far so good! Keep your lucky charms with you!

I'd love to see higher signal levels so as stupid FSM's can't hit you on a QAS for low signal when they are checking it in the damn rain! :rant:

Better news for us in PR....for 119...no more huge antenna. A small antenna will work...plus as I heard sometime back...maybe a single antenna solution for both sat...not to mention some more HD channels
