a couple questions..

If I attach an external hard drive to a 722 box, is there any way to transfer what's in my dish dvr box to the external hard drive? Have a bunch of Supernaturals I'd like to move there...

also,

does it really matter what brand of external hard drive to use with the box?

thanks in advance,

JD

The way the Dish DVRs are programmed, you can only move recorded shows from the internal drive to the external drive and back.

I think most people recommend the Western Digital boxes.

There are several requirements for the EHD.

1. It must be a 2GB drive or less.
2. It must have its own power supply, Dish usb port does not have enough amperage to spin up most EHD's (some may work, but reliability is questionable).
3. It must have only one spindle in the case, i.e., no external drives with 2 750GB drives within the case.

That's all that comes to mind right now.

Simply plug the EHD into the 722 and it will recognize it, format it and then you pick programs to move.

He does. :)

Although going back to when I had my first TI Instruments computer, 2GB was unattainable! Cost would be that of a new car. Lol.

Although most EHDs intended for PCs will work, I recommend spending a bit extra for a WD DVR Expander. It's intended for DVR/AV use and the higher loads expected in such use. I'm looking for one right now, to replace a suspect PC style EHD.

BTW, that DVR Expander is in short supply. I've got the last one on hold at my local Microcenter. A few online sites expect the next shipment 6/8. Best Buy is reputed to stock them. Prices vary wildly.
