I've spent the last few weeks deciding on which FTA system to get.
All the components: USB receiver, 36" dish, .4db LNB, Stab positioner...
Not exactly the "popular" configuration.
Now, I see one of the major dealers just raised the price $20

So, what was this I saw mentioned about members getting credit/discount with some of our sponsors?

Sadoun was offering a discount to members but that may be over...

Sadoun offers top notch service and support! Check them out! :yes

I know what you mean Anole. I was looking at receivers Monday night and figured that I would think about it for a day or two more before I made a decision to purchase one. Tuesday I went back to the site to look at the 3500S specs one more time and the price of the receiver had gone up $10 overnight. I had pretty much decided on the 3500S so I went ahead and bought it right then and there for fear the price would go up even more in the coming days. The price gouging that is going on is ridiculous.

I dont think a $10 price increase is "price gouging"... prices do change all of the time..

If it was a $50+ price increase overnight, then yea, that would be bad.. (ala the Coolsat 4000 at FTADirect)

Yeah, I know that's the reason.
What is really frustrating, at least to me anyway, is that it seems that some of the equipment manufacturers and dealers cater to that segment of the market.

Ultatryon, I would agree that the $10 price increase does not qualify as price gouging.

The gouging I was referring to was not my specific experience, but more so what seems to be going on in the FTA market in general right now.

To be blunt....the only reason that the fta recievers are selling like hotcakes is because of the hacking community. Or better put...those that just want free tv and don't look at this as a hobby. The one bright spot is once everyone has bought these new recievers and charlie starts rolling his keys daily the vast majority of people who thought they were going to buy a box and get free tv are going to get very frustrated very fast. At that point maybe we can pick some of these up a little cheaper on ebay.

I run a pci card and have an older fortec dvb-786v3 reciever and want to go with the 3500s for the blindsearch features but will wait a bit for the initial craze to die down and try to pick one up a little cheaper.

You can thank the hackers for that.
No, you can thank the greedy dealers for that.
Or, you could call it supply and demand.... but....
First the posted 5% discount disappeared, then a week later the price went up $20.

...and I know exactly what is going on.

My friend deals with a wholesaler, and when they were having problems with using FTA receivers for something other than what they were intended, he was blowing them out at $80.00 a piece. Seems the true FTA market isn't that big. Then when someone figured out how to get it working for "that other purpose", the wholesaler put his price up to $160 a unit. We also have no knowledge as to what the manufacturors are doing to the price as demand skyrockets.

It is supply and demand. Unfortunately, the demand is caused right now by hackers. I am sure there is some "gouging" too, but take the hackers out of the equation and FTA receivers would be a heck of alot cheaper.

Its funny though....Some of these hacker types always state that their hacking "is a hobby". Ever heard the phrase "Signal testing"...What a joke. Totally agree with your comments.

...one more thing. One thing to do, like myself, is watch what receivers are working for the illegal stuff and whats not. If it doesn't work for the illegal stuff the price usually drops below what they cost before. I know I picked up a digiwave for 80$ us before the big n1 hack and then then the price shot upto 180$ and after the stream went N2, it went back down to 80$ then it has gone upto 200$. So keep watching, the 3500s will come down once security measures get thrown in and the hackers are stuck for awhile. What I was anticipating and unfortuetely didn't happen was a complete unhackable stream, then the prices would have dropped like a rock and us real FTA hobbiests would have benefited.

I'm way behind on all this, but how can you "hack" a "free" signal? We are just talking about FTA/OTA receivers right? Not decoding encrypted cable channels or anything... If it's a free signal over-the-air, what is there to hack?

no..they are hacking Dish Network to get it for free using illegal software in the box

Hacking is a subject we do not allow nor tolerate here :)

If we wait long enought things will work out for us. Dish Network will do what DTV did OR a different receiver will be needed and there will be a ton on E-bay and other sources. Just wait and it will happen.

These damn hackers piss me off.
To damn cheap to pay for a legitmate sub. And they cause the price of FTA boxes to rise. Which pisses me off. The last storm that went through I had a lighting strick that took out my 32in TV, surround sound receiver, Replay TV 5004 and mt Pansat 2500a.

And now because of the damn hackers its going to cost more to get a new FTA receiver.

Makes me wanna kick hackers in the nuts.

I just want to strangle the guy who didn't pay me the $200 he owed me so I could buy the equipment last week before the price rise.

Hi guys,

Good read, It's ashame that so many people have been misinformed about FTA I my self was and a lot of people think that there receivers are only for picking up the big guys and it's free (not), I sub With Bell expressvu been with them 7 years never thought of hacking.

Thanks to Iceberg I picked up a 3500s a few days ago he really got me pumped up over the unit (Great write up by the way) the 3500s is a gem highly recommend.

Prices have gone nuts as you guys said I paid $240 canadian at the end of the day and while paying in advance for mine they rased the price by $60 and on the day I picked it up they had the nerve to complain that they are losing money because I and other got it at there so called old price!!

Any way I would like to say great site I'm a true believer of true FTA; to the hackers read from this site and LEARN there so much more out there, I say get your self a 33" dish & a true FTA LNB and a dish motor (Sky's the limit) True FTA testing.

Kaloo.
