I agree with Bruce's deduction. The offerings from HBO is far less. Netflix had equal originals to that of HBO. Furthermore, they both are hit or miss in their monthly movie offerings. I do care to say that Netflix is getting better in its Stand Up Comedy as well. Dave Chapelle, Joe Rogan, Jim Norton, etc have all released Netflix specials within the last year. Boxing was HBO's last true cavieot, and they pulled the plug on that as well.

It's just as dumb as when they canceled Inside the NFL and let Showtime grab that.

I grew up with HBO. During the week programming would usually begin around 1pm then they generally had a movie begin at 11pm and would sigh off whenever that movie completed. On the weekends they would begin programming around 10am and at night there would be an additional movie following the 11pm movie. I don't recall exactly when they went to 24 hours programming.

I also recall the video shorts they used as fillers between movies, some were interesting.

I have had HBO and Max since the early days on cable, over 40 years and have had them with Dish for 21 years. I actually like linear programming and simply scanning for some movie to watch. Maybe I am lazy, but VOD just doesn't do it for me. Doing without for the past few days I realize I probably can save $25/month by dropping them as the other movie channels carry many of the same movies at different times. However, the real downside is that without HBO/Max, more than half of the channels in the 300 block are not carried in HD, primarily ENC and TMC channels. I have complained to Dish numerous time about this, but they really don't seem to care.

My family originally had Cinemax, but after the late night movies started, they switched to HBO. They picked Cinemax because it was on 24 hours from launch. We never subbed to UHF scrambled movie networks. Luckily, we had cable early on.

I remember when my local cable company had channel 96 as a shared channel between Court TV and Hot Choice PPV, in the late 90s. Every night at 10:00, court would be taken off for porn. I used to laugh at that one. When we tuned to it during the Court TV hours, we'd get a scrambled image from Hot Choice, then it would jump to Court. At night, the channel was replaced with a message saying to call and order. I was just like when I would switch to Showtime or The Movie Channel and get the scrambled image, then the channel would jump to a banner telling me that I didn't subscribe.

And that was after we updated our cable system. We had Viewers Choice and Hot Choice 24 hours in the early 90s, but then they updated the system and ran out of channel space for the old analogue system. That was nearly close to when they updated to digital cable. At one point, subscribers to The Movie Channel needed to get a special smart box, because they moved it to channel 79, and the regular boxes couldn't receive 79.

The also moved Viewers Choice to channel 95, but the reception came in snowy, so after complaints, they were forced to realign the numbers again to put Viewers Choice on a lower number without interference.
