So if I dont have the ability to record the same time Im watching something else, would that only require one wire?

Perhaps you could attach two cables to the existing one at one end, and pull it from the other.

Thats what I mean Dish Network has a one wire solution, so you would think that Directv will be coming out with one in the future, wouldn't you?

I know but when are thye going to be available since someone said they are not yet available to the general public.

I went and looked at the recievers and the only think I would lose if I had only one wire would be the ability to be watching one channel adn recording another, correct?

Single Wire Multiswitch, it's in beta testing now, it would allow you to do the 2 line stuff with only the one original line.

It is NOT available yet and no word if it will be a user available item or just thru D* installers.

Jimbo
Just via Dtv installers for now, they will be rolling out in larger quantities in about a month.

I have received some pretty reliable information that DirecTV is planning on integrating the SWM technology into the LNB of the dish starting early next year. So just hang tight a little bit longer. This will be a much cleaner & easier setup than using the external component and running 4 cables to it from the dish.

But again, if all you want is HD (no recording), you only need one wire anyway.... two wires is only for the DVR, and you could live with one wire into your DVR until the multiswitch comes out if it's that big of an issue.

EDIT: Sorry, I think I confused myself here... you still need multiple wires from the roof to the multiswitch. It's from there to the receiver that my comments apply.

You would also lose the ability to record two programs at once.

There was a time when you could only use one OTA tuner if you only had one SAT line connected too.

But it doesn't help the thousands who already have a behemoth dish. For them, the SWM outboard module is very desirable.

There's also the issue of most DIRECTV receivers in the field not being SWM compatible...

My guess is it would be for new installs (when the R16 is released all of D*'s current receivers will be SWM capable).
