Just tried this last week traveling through western New Mexico and Eastern Arizona on back roads. Was able to send and receive text messages. Strangely it did not work in all areas where I didn't have a cell signal. Several times it indicated SAT but also at times just showed no cell signal at all. Must be that no satellite with capabilities was available.
