the touchpad remotes look like something Apple would do (reinventing something already developed nicely, to create a niche item that people didn't know they needed until they tried it!)

Did they not work cuz of bad design/engineering or was it too radical a change after using regular remotes for 30 years?

Not on the 922, not with the remote. At least not until this feature is added in some future update.

Well not completely a manual timer but there is something close:

You can also set a manual timer from Dish Online and Dish Remote Access. Regardless of how you set them, you need to unskip events in the daily schedule.
