Is the 722 DVR too loud for a bedroom?

I would say something less than that. Again if you want to give comical but inaccurate answers fine. But that is not particularly useful in making the decision he has to make. Personally if I was a really light sleeper I would consider putting it in another room but I would not put it in the bedroom and unplug it each night.

I am not sure that thsi comparison will be useful to the OP but I would say that at reboot it makes a sound equal to the sound made by the two aquarium filters in my 55 gallon aquarium. taht would not awaken me but that same sound level would bother others. If anyone easle has another more common sound to compare it to perhaps that would help.

Saying "it sounds like a jet engine" isn't the same as saying "it's as loud as a jet engine".

I don't see the gross exaggeration here at all.

OK, will one of those Radio Shack sound level meters work to measure the decibel noise when the reciever reboots? I'm willing to go get one and reboot the receiver and see what number it puts out. I will also reboot the 722 and the 625 so we have some kind of numbers to go by. I'm willing to bet that the 622 comes as a winner here.

I had the 625 in the bedroom before and it was not as loud as the 622. I've never heard the 722 since it's in the living room.

Since the 722 isa 622 with a larger HD (or so we are told) I would guess that they are identical. Ina living room everything seems quieter as there is more ambient noise. i will take your word thata 625 si quieter.

I still don't get all the fuss, is it loud on reboot, yes, real loud, no. And it all can be remedied by changing the time of the daily update to a time that doesn't interfere with your sleep. Simple, and yet glorious HD!

And it is not as loud as the garage door opener under our bedroom, but I got used to that and it doesn't wake me anymore.

"Since the 722 isa 622 with a larger HD (or so we are told) I would guess that they are identical."

Not exactly. The chip inside is different and the 722 is a lot quieter. I can tell you that I had the 622 in the same location where the 722 is right now and the 722 is a lot quieter. When I reboot the 722, it's similar to rebooting the 625. Maybe I have a defective 622 but it's been very solid as far as I can tell, well except for the noise when rebooting.

i will take your word for taht. tahnsk for the info. I had been told that they were the same except for the HD and color.

Unbelievable thread.
I think there are two groups talking past each other.

We live in a city and sleep with an open window about 350 nights a year and there are barking dogs, police and border patrol helicopters, sirens and other city noises we are used to and we can't hear the 622 six feet away (a lot of the time even if we tried).

However, my wife has family who live in the country, in the woods and it's so quiet she and her brother and sister can hear a racoon walk on the fallen leaves on the lawn on warm fall nights when the windows are open.

And during the winter with the windows closed they can hear a mouse walking across the kitchen floor downstairs. My brother, who's house they are in, would go nuts trying to deal with a 622 drive spooling up in the night in his room and would even wake up if it was a couple of rooms away the first few nights if he decided to get one.

All the posters are just relating their own personal experiences.

The OP needs to figure out his bedroom's place in the "night noise spectrum" from the dead quiet country to pretty quiet suburbs or all the way to the din of the city from an open window..

I agree with that totally. If we are actually going to help the OP we need to give him some real info about how loud it is not vent our frustration or say it is OK.

as for the 722 doing HD VOD that sounds great I did not know that.

I almost forgot an important factor; age.

Any normal twenty year old could hear a 622 across a twenty foot room if it was quiet enough. On the other hand I'll bet the majority of 70 year olds couldn't detect any sound at all coming from a 622 at half the distance.

I have an old CPU fan wired into the 12v power on my Panasonic Showstopper in our bedroom.

It makes about the same amount of noise 24/7 as the 622 fan does at bootup, but we sleep right through it because it is constant.

It actually masks other small irritating noises and helps us sleep better - WHITE NOISE!

Is it really suggested to unplug it each night?

Is the 622 any better?
No, do not unplug your DVR nightly. Take it out of the bedroom. I had a 625 in my bedroom for a month. It drove me nuts. I keep a 221 in my bedroom now. My 622 is in my family room. DVR's are LOUD! They make those old top loading VHS recorders sound quiet.

My new loudest bedroom component is a cheap Sony receiver. However, unlike the DVR when it's off, it's off.

This discussion was had for the 942 way back, I had a 942 at the time and the 942 was louder in "sleep" mode but i got a 622 and got used to it. I have it in an Armoire that the 622 is in but as was stated when it reboots it is initiallly loud, moved my update to 3pm.
I will also add that when i record programs overnight i dont notice it. In case you were thinking of doing that.
On another small note, if you add the ethernet connection there is a very bright ( in a dark room) green light, i just put a bit of duct tape over it.

BTW i cant imagine not having a DVR in the bedroom anymore, as my wife falls asleep half way through watching almost everything, she would always be complaining she missed the end - DVR prevents that, as i just hit the record when i hear the sounds of her sleep.:D
