Has there been any activity on the Liberty Media buyout of Directv from News Corp.? I thought it was supposed to close last summer.

On this weeks financial conference call - Chase Carey said he expects the deal to close before the end of this year. No reasons given for any delay.

Just this from DIRECTV Q3 2007 Earnings Call Transcript:
Chase Carey...Quote: Finally, before turning the call back to John, I'd like to briefly mention that as far as we know, the Liberty transaction while frustratingly slow, remains on track to be completed this year. Of course predicting what happens in Washington is never easy, but we're optimistic that we're in the final stretch, and we'll get approval before year end.

What does all this mean? Will they keep the name Directv? Will this effect subscribers in any way?

I think it will eventually go through, as some proponents have tried to sabotage the deal. Mr Murdoch has said DirecTV is like a "Bird Turd", so I would believe with all his power he will get the sale done. He wants (Mr. Murdoch) out of the US business of DirecTV. IMHO.

I know the mainstream view is AT&T looking to buy E* -- But I have heard a few ramblings, even Scott G mentioned some info on his podcast last week?

No DirecTV Rupert Murdoch said performance at the time before HD add channels was a "turd bird". Rupert is still waiting for the transfer/ (sale of company) of shares to Liberty from DirecTV and Rupert is out. There have been some road blocks in the transfer, hopefully it will end up with Liberty.

I don't know of any comments by Charlie Ergen calling Dish a "turd Bird".
