Macroblocking

Can someone please define? Ive seen this term used a lot lately?

I'll steal this from Scott's article from MultiChannel.com. I'm not sure if macro- and mircroblocking are the same thing, and someone else will be able to provide a more technical explanation.

This is a non-technical term used when macroblocks are missing and show up as video errors. Square areas of the picture do not show the correct portion of the image, but instead show a single color block. Advanced decoders hide these types of errors in a term called error concealment.

A great example of this is last night during raw, on the hd feed when the wrestlers came out from the ramp.. instead of seing the face we saw skintone colored blobs.

I seem to see this a lot on NBC's NFL coverage. Sometimes with CBS but not as bad.

NBC Sports holds the title for Sports Macroblocking IMO

I'm sure part of this is due to my local affiliate broadcasting the SD feed on a sub channel and the HD feed on the main. They even go so far as to stretch the 4:3 content for me, isn't that nice of them.
