HD channels have gone "searching". Before I pay Direct TV another dime I thought I'd try to "go local". Dish is the new Slim Line 5 LNB and the receiver is a HR20-700. Nearly all the stand. def channels come in and nearly all the HD channels don't. Had Direct TV customer service walk me through all the checks. Then he tapped out. He asked to set up the service call and/or service plan blah, blah. Anyway I'll pay someone in the business to check and adjust my alignment.

Thanks,
Jim M

WELCOME!

Can you give us a run-down on all your hardware?

Dish, switches, OTA, etc.

Do you have B-band converters installed?

Slim Line 5 LNB, HR20-700, B-Bands installed, no OTA and I believe the dish has a multi-switch built in. I climbed up to take a peak and noticed the mast is not at 90 degrees according to the bubble. But the mounted dish felt solid otherwise. I ran a "repeat set up" and the test that follows indicated a failure of satellite 99*s. All others said OK. Thanks for your help!

G35,
IF you signal strength is high your dish should be OK, you should be getting most of your HD channels from the 103 sat, you should also have good signals on the 101, 110, and 119.
IF you are not getting HD off of the 103, you should at least get them from the 101, which is where the old Mpeg 2 channels are, such as ESPN, ESPN2, HD Net ect (73,72, 79). If your not getting them either, maybe D* doesn't have them turned on on your account. Might try calling to verify.
If you are getting the 70's HD's and you are sure your B Band Convertors are good (swap them with another rec. will verify this). Are you getting HD on another rec ?
I would check for any connections made in the coax from the dish to the rec's. ..... any addl. multiswitches ?

Btw, what did this have to do with the tech needing $ 50 ?

Thanks Jimbo!

The current set up is almost 4 months old. I have two recv. One old SD recv (no HD/HD DVR) in the bedroom. Good signal. No problem. Living room is the HR20-700. For giggles I picked up a Winegard Satellite Finder Meter. I have three cables coming from the dish to a splitter. Not sure if this correct way to test it, but?? Hooked up one out "to the recv" as instructed and the other in from a LNB. Did this to all three. On two the light in the meter lit and when I adjusted the meter "up" it pegged on "10" and was "screaming". One (middle connection on the splitter) no light, nothing, zero. Thought I was getting close. Repeated the meter "test" right at the recv. with B-bands installed and got meter light and when I turned the knob all the clockwise it pegged on 10 and screamed, on BOTH CONNECTIONS
How can a signal test fail up stream and pass down stream? Unless of course I screwing up the test in the first place. Thanks in advance

I have an idea on the meter your talking about, but thats irrelavent , if it's the same one I'm thinking of, I started out using it and found that it picked up ALL sats including ones I did not need and had no way to identify, I have since done all my set ups without a meter.

So G35,
Are you getting any HD in the 70's channels ?
What kind of SS are you getting on the 103 (b) ?

I still think its a connection or a defective LNB ...

Jimbo

76 was on for 30 seconds and now is searching. Same thing with the channel guide on 77, on briefly now searching. Neither coming back. FYI, I should be recieving all except HBO and Showtime.

Would it be of help to post transponder readings?

Not really.

Check all connections again ....
is your dish reachable ?
in the daylight, can you run a seperate coax directly from dish lnb to back of rec. ?
See if that clears your trouble, IF so you need either new coax or connectors, don't forget to check where the ground block comes together as well.

If this doesn't fix it, do you have a second rec. to try at this location ?
Just as a test .

I guess it's always possible that the rec is bad, but I think you said it was changed out already.

Sure. Would it be wise to run two? Since it uses two, or? I assume you mean from the splitter to the recvr? The splitter is also my ground connection. Thanks!
Jim M

...opps, sorry. Reread your last post. I'll run them directly from the dish LNBs to the recvr.

Jim M

Explain what you mean by splitter, are you talking a ground block, or an actual splitter ?
You cannot have any cable tv type splitters in line between the LNB and the rec., if figured you knew this .... that definatly would cause your trouble IF thats your situation.

Try running two lines from the LNB to the rec's and see what happens.
IF you do have a actual splitter in the line, remove it and use a barrel to connect , try to use a barrel with a blue interior if you have one.

Jimbo

Your right, gounding block...looks a LOT like this...

I'll do it.
That's not my ground block. :)
Just using it as an example.
Thanks,
I'll report after I run the coaxial.

Jimbo,

Found something interesting. ALL CHANNELS COME IN PERFECTLY after I disconnected SATELLITE IN 2 and then reset the box. Seems to be a problem somewhere along that line. Possible recv. issue as well.

Jim M

Think I got. Cable bad between grounding block and recvr. Swapped with a old piece of coax I had in storage. Reset and all is good. Hope it stays that way! :) Thanks for your help.

Jim M

I had a similar problem with some of the new HD channels not coming through.

DTV came out again and realized that my installers for the HR21's/5LNB dish used my old multiswitch.

They replaced it and i'm now getting all of my HD channels.

Glad you found it ...
Chances are your good to go. :):):)
