Heyman's Latest: Sabathia, Dunn, Huff, Mora

By Tim Dierkes [August 25 at 11:14am CST]
Hot off the press from SI.com's Jon Heyman:
  • An executive who knows C.C. Sabathia well told Heyman the pitcher's first choice in free agency is the Giants. It's not a great fit, as starting pitching is the Giants' strength and Sabathia would add another $100MM+ contract to their rotation. The Yankees are considered the offseason frontrunners for Sabathia, though former teammate Casey Blake sees C.C. in Dodger blue.
  • Heyman believes a claim on Paul Byrd would've made sense for the Yanks.
  • Heyman agrees with the Dodgers' choice not to risk a claim on Adam Dunn. That decision is tough to defend, though, since no one expected Reds GM Walt Jocketty to give up two draft picks for $3.45MM in salary relief.
  • No one's interested in Aubrey Huff or Melvin Mora, who have both cleared waivers. The Orioles might have an easier time trading them this winter.
I still can't believe that the Yankees didn't put in a claim for Byrd!

Drew's status has Red Sox considering Kotsay

J.D. Drew's latest setback has Boston stepping up the search for outfield help, just in case Drew is going to be unavailable for a time.
According to multiple sources, the Red Sox have shown interest in Atlanta outfielder Mark Kotsay, but as of Monday morning nothing was imminent on that front. The Red Sox had previously inquired about Houston's Darin Erstad but were rebuffed.
Kotsay is certainly available, but with four hits in his last 25 at bats the interest may be waning.

Look for the Braves to trade Kelly Johnson this winter as Martin Prado has impressed the coaching staff to the extent that the Braves may be ready to give Prado a chance to be the regular second baseman in 2009. Even if Prado isn't the guy, expect Johnson to be gone. Offensively, he's actually proven to be too selective and his power totals have been disappointing.

Kenny Rogers has to decide at season's end whether to try to come back for another season at age 44, but the Tigers could have a decision to make sooner.
Sunday's loss to the Royals pushed Rogers over the 160-inning mark and earned him a second $250,000 bonus for innings pitched. He'll earn similar bonuses for 170 and 180 innings pitched, then $500,000 each if he were to reach 190 and 200 innings. Though those payments are deferred until 2010, that could still be too much for the Tigers if they were to formally decide that they're out of contention and that Rogers won't be back next season.

The Red Sox picked up Paul Byrd to shore up their rotation, and some believe Boston will try to add another arm as insurance in light of Josh Beckett's arm issues.
The Rangers, with Kevin Millwood and Vicente Padilla available, might be a fit. The Rangers are looking to trade either but are listening to offers.
Millwood, 33, has battled hamstring and groin injuries this year but has pitched well when healthy. He is signed through next season for $11 million. Padilla is signed through 2009 with a club option for 2010.

One scout's opinion: "When it's all said and done Adam Dunn will mean more to Arizona than Manny (Ramirez) will to the Dodgers."
The Diamondbacks are 8-4 since Dunn arrived, and Dunn has contributed with a .463 on-base percentage and a .950 OPS.

The Yankees contacted Texas regarding slugger Milton Bradley recently but those talks fizzled.

Twins reacquire "Everyday" Eddie

Great move by the Twins!

Twins Acquire Eddie Guardado

By Tim Dierkes [August 25 at 3:30pm CST]
3:30pm: The Rangers will receive minor league reliever Mark Hamburger.
2:13pm: According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, the Twins have acquired Eddie Guardado from the Rangers. Joe Christensen wrote on Friday that the Twins would make a claim but didn't expect a deal.
Guardado has been useful for the Rangers, posting a 3.65 ERA in 49.1 innings. The ERA is a bit deceiving, but it's still a helpful addition for the Twins. Guardado is a familiar face, having spent a decade in the organization. He's still owed roughly $620K this year.

Grady Sizemore became a member of the 30/30 club with two homers Monday night. Sizemore is the first AL player to accomplish the feat since Alfonso Soriano did it for Texas in 2005.

Considering his age and overall skills, if I'm starting a team tomorrow, Grady would be my second choice- behind only Hanley Ramirez. Dude is a stud!

Quick Note Bill: By becoming a member of the 30/30 club, Grady Sizemore also becomes only the 2nd Indian in their rich history to accomplish this feat! The other was Joe Carter.

That's quite an accomplishment. I always forget that Carter played for the Tribe. :)

Yep. After his rookie season with the Cubs, Carter was traded to the Indians. It was in Cleveland where he first blossomed into a star.

He played in Cleveland for 5 years before being traded. The management at the time didn't like his defense.

HD MM,
was Rick Sutcliffe and Brook Jacoby involved in that Cubs-Indians trade?

Yes. That was the trade to bring Carter to Cleveland.

In dealing Carter to the Padres, the Indians got Sandy Alomar Jr., Carlos Baerga and Chris James.

A year later, the Padres traded Carter along with Robbie Alomar to Toronto for Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez. Toronto went on to win 2 World Series Titles with Carter.

I agree. Great pickup. Also a blast from the past for Twins fans!

We can call this three game series - "Turds battling for third".

Well, the Indians took the sole possession of "Turd" in the AL Central by pummeling the kittens 10-4 last night. The Indians go for their 10th straight win tonight and 3rd straight series sweep.

Carmona vs. Verlander

Should be a good one...

Verlander has been getting smacked around , for what seems forever, by Cleveland. Bring on football.

This is GREAT news for the Red Sox:

BOSTON -- Josh Beckett was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a strained right elbow after the Boston ace was examined by Dr. James Andrews.
"Everything came out, the word would be awesome, from our standpoint," manager Terry Francona said. "Everything was clean. There were a number of tests and Josh came thought with flying colors. Obviously, we hoped for that. We needed to get some closure."
Francona hopes Beckett can return to the rotation on Sept. 5 in Texas.
Beckett was placed on the DL retroactive to Aug. 18.
The Red Sox purchased catcher David Ross' contract.

Also, starting tonight the Red Sox play 20 out of their last 29 games at Fenway. That's pretty huge considering the Sox home record this year is 43-18.

The Phillies have reportedly acquired Matt Stairs from Toronto. The Phillies need a lefthanded bat when Geoff Jenkins went on the DL.

The Red Sox shutout the White Sox tonight, 8-0. Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched eight shutout innings and gave up only two hits. Dice-K is now 16-2 with a 2.82 ERA and is clearly #3 in the Cy Young race behind Cliff Lee and Francisco Rodriguez.

Also, Jason Bay had three more RBI's (a bases loaded clearing double), and now has 27 RBI's in 25 games in a Sox uniform!
