Sure enough, they tried it, but since the card was not valid, they didn't get away with it. So, they didn't get to improperly charge me $500 or so. I didn't need a financial adviser to not allow a company to rip me off.

Far better is to simply call Dish and work your way up the tree until you find someone willing to credit your account. You will be in a far better situation financially in the long term.
A decent credit rating is an awful thing to waste
