Questions about D*'s HD STBs

I currently have E* but I plan to move to D* when they release an affordable HD DVR. Right now I only have an HD STB but I wanted to know if D*'s STB will upconvert the SD picture to an HD format as the 811 does

(I know the 811 just scales the SD image and that the picture is not true HD.)

I ask because my parents have Comcast and their STB does not have a scaler so the SD channels look worse than they did before they got the LCD HDTV. I would hate to switch to D* and then find that the SD channels are so bad that I never watch SD on my big screen

Your local PQ totally depends on what the local affilliates deliver to D*. Your best bet for locals currently is an OTA setup.

As far as the upconversion capabilities, I think the current HD models handle that, and the pic looks good as long as you use the vertical bars.

Price changes are coming soon. Even if you change right now, you won't be sorry and you will be very pleased w/the quality.

The SD is upconverted to whatever resolution you have the STB set to, unless you have the STB set to Native Pass. Some people prefer to send the Native signal if their TVs do a good job of upscalling. Either way, the SD quality looks pretty good, at least with my current LSS3200a.
