I've bought several E* receivers on ebay over the years without a hitch.

I've also sold several on ebay as well. The only advice I would give is:
Describe the item to a T and no reserve price. I learned the hard way to start your bidding at a low price, but not too low. A "buy it now" price might grab a quick sale if priced right.

I'm scheduled to get a receiver upgrade and since I own the one I'm currently using I might sell it on eBay.

Just wondered if I had any liability in doing so?

Will the installer de-activiate the old receiver before he leaves or should I call Dish and have them do it once I'm sure the new one is working properly?

Don't count on them to deactivate it. Do it yourself, even if the installer says that he did it.

Older receivers have little or no value for the LEGAL buyers..

wanna bet? I have purchased many "old" receivers (301/311, 811, etc) and they work great as additional receivers.

If you don't need HD, those "old" boxes work fine

I actually have had people ask me when I'm going to upgrade my 508PVR. They want it because it has no DVR fees.

Didn't say they didn't work.. Just said the value was low.. It's not worth my trouble to list something that might bring little money. The only people paying good money are the people that are doing unmentionable things to the recievers.

Is there any risk in giving potential buyers the s/n of the receivers so they can call E* and confirm there's no balance?

I think the worst hackers are the ones that ask the ROM and Rev code of the smart card. I had the potential buyer of a 311 ask me to just ship the card and not bother shipping the receiver!

There was alot of discussions about giving R00 and S00 number to buyers.

Yes, you must provide the info to buyers. Period.

It really depends on what type of receiver your trying to sell and then the question is it worth selling?

I got more "DISH" Equipment at my store than anyone else here, and there are many times where I would rather just sit on something than list it on ebay and give someone a bargain.

Now I do not support piracy, but piracy is what drives the cost of most of the receivers on ebay.

The problem is all this free to air crap they got out there, that is just ruining the market place for anyone trying to sell.

The only thing that I find that is really holding value is 501/508 and 721 receivers since they are grandfathered from the fees, everything else for the exception of the Model 6000 is selling for next to nothing!

When all new installs become MPEG-4 I can see the MPEG-2 receivers taking a dive in price.
