If the receiver were leased and not returned and no longer being rented, could it not be considered stolen property. If one is the knowing receiver (sorry for the pun) of stolen property, and does not return it to its rightful owner, doesn't that make one receiver of stolen property? Isn't destruction of stolen property also a crime. Just saying. You took a $30 gamble to make some money and instead you got a lesson in life. Sometimes doing the right thing is good for the soul and not the pocketbook. If doing the right thing were cheap, we'd all be doing it.

I read that part. Who ever is selling the items in the estate sale, have an obligation to make sure they are not costing the estate any money.

Here is a question. If there was a Comcast box, would the person doing the estate sale be selling it on ebay?

Ya, I've moved in many places where the previous tenants left the Motorola/Scientific-Atlanta cable boxes there. I kindly returned them to the local office when I was going there anyway to sign up for cable internet. They waived my install fee.

Returning used equipment exposes private information.

I called dish to ask for a box to return a used receiver to dish.

The box had the account holders full name on it, and telephone number.

I will give you an example of how this is bad.

1. If I died, my dish receiver might be sold at an auction. Depending on what happens, the account may not be turned off.

2. When I die, my SSN is publicly available.

If someone bought my dish receiver..found out it was leased, and they got a box to return it...

They could hook the receiver up, and then use my SSN, Name and telephone number to gain full control of my old account.

Then they can add the biggest package ever, and keep watching it until the account goes into collections.

The bill would not even be sent to them, it would most likely get sent to my executor.

Now in this particular instance, the person isn't deceased, but it's a likely scenario. Lots of auctions are done after a person dies.

So dish...if someone calls to ask for a box to return used equipment, I think it's kind of foolish to put their full name and telephone number on it.

The receiver you have owes a ballance. Why would you pay someone's old bill to reactivate the account?

As far as the ssn, dish networks system will flag it when you try to activate a new account.

I bet now that they tie the delinquent account information and changed it to your address, you start getting collection letters in the mail for their past due balance.

For future receiver purchases, get the R00 and the S19/S23 numbers and run them by Dish before purchase.

Not possible. Dish would know something fishy was going on. The dead only watch Fearnet and we all know that Dish doesn't carry Fearnet, so why would a dead person use Dish?

I have two purchased Hoppers (one is a Hopper w/Sling) that I could sell any time I want. Many unscrupulous people will however sell leased receivers because they are just that, unscrupulous. That's why you have the R00 and the S19/S23 numbers verified beforehand. If they don't want to give you those numbers, then chances are they are one of the aforementioned unscrupulous characters.

This is typically why I almost always have a ceiling and basement limit on prices. If something is too inexpensive, that is almost always a bad sign. I did get lucky once, getting an authentic copy of a rare DVD set at the pirated DVD set rate. I think the seller didn't realize what the going market rate was.

I remember someone allegedly checking the numbers and having a false negative with the receiver being leased and having a balance (ie the operator said it wasn't, but later on they found it was). Probably best to double check.
